I heard it ploop into a muddy ditch on the side of the road…just saw the back end of its shell slip into the water….on which was floating two filthy WalMart bags! So, pulled the stroller (into which were stuffed my two boys) onto the side of the road, found a stick and pulled those suckers off. Then, bleah, put the wet and nasty bags in the side pouch of the stroller. Pat on back to self. Go pay it forward now, Mr. Turtle. And I’m glad I use reuseable shoppping bags now.
you even noticed it! Talk about being in the here and now, I don’t think I would have even looked to see what the Ploop was about.
This is the second turtle rescue. When we lived in the Deep South, I found
a giant, scaly, kind of scary-looking one with claws and a big snapper (I
guess it was a tortise?) anyway it was in the middle of our parking lot at
work and bound to get squashed. I threw a sweater over it and lugged it
over to the creek bed. It was an adrenaline rush.
We don't get reptiles up here
Well, I suppose there are salamanders and rare small turtles in the forest lakes, but we never see them. It sounds so exotic when you talk about lugging a tortoise. I am more familiar with tortoises in the cartoon version. Wearing glasses and giving advice to all the other animals.
Let me not mislead you....
he was not one of those 100 year old tortises you could ride on…but he was pretty intimidating looking. He must have lost his glasses because how else would he be so oblivious as to wander into our parking lot.
Tomorrow is Turtle Day!
Perhaps they’ll invite you to the party! Seeing as you’re their saviour and all.
