lose weight once and for all (read all 3 entries…)
Why the hell is it so hard? 2 years ago

All my life I was told I was skinny. Looking back on those pictures, I really don’t think so. I wasn’t fat, but I sure wasn’t skinny. I always had the pudgy cheeks. Now I’ve been gaining weight even after I’ve adjusted my lifestyle. I’ve become vegetarian, I work a job that’s more active than my previous desk job, I have dogs that I walk at least occasionally, I work in my garden, I don’t eat out. Now I’m 5’ tall and stuck at 145-150#. I’m miserable, and I want to eat even healthier but my husband complains about the money (whole grain pastas and brown rice and things are more expensive than white) and that I’m making excuses about not losing weight and that I’m just lazy and need to exercise more. He doesn’t understand that I need to know what the complete plan is before I can successfully use any of it. I feel like if I’m not doing one part 100% then what’s the point of doing the rest?

You're doing great

Hi,

You’re doing a terrific job. Don’t let your husband discourage or criticize your efforts. The difference between a healthier choice is not that great. The only thing that is far more expensive is if you are going from white rice to wild rice. White rice to brown rice is not that much of a difference. It doesn’t sound like you’ve joined weight watchers, jenny craig or these other weight loss groups that can be significantly expensive. If he loves you as well as himself the small expense to eat better quality food should not be an issue.

Secondly men lose weight easier than women. Once a person hits 25 years, the metabolism begins it slow down. For most women at 35 years one starts to gain weight unless you’re an exercise addict – you’ve seen them – the women that run five miles every morning and are rake thin. Once you hit 45 it becomes very difficult because whatever hits you lips seems to forever stick to the hips.

Please don’t be miserable…you are doing great steps to acheive your goal. I understand you and please be gentle on yourself that it’s not going to come off overnight. Have you lost even a few pounds? When you first start, you may even gain a few pounds before you lose anything because your body is adjusting to a new scheme.

If you eat a great deal less, your body will think it’s being starved and store everything it takes in – Ive gone through that lately because I wasn’t eating well in the last couple months as my mom died a couple of months ago – now that I’ve started eating on a regular basis, I’ve gained weight.

I’ve watched people go from morbidly obese to losing over 100 lbs and it didn’t matter what system they were using. The biggest thing was there was a balance between calorie intake and physical output. But THERE ARE PLATEAUS. If you’ve lost some and it’s not coming off, you may have plateaued for a bit.

Please don’t be discouraged. We have our good days and bad days. You’ll be able to lose weight…maybe before work, or afterwork, you can make 15 minutes to take your dogs for a walk just around tbe block. The thing is to do it every day as a habit and to do it briskly. This way you have at least one daily activity of 15 minutes. Don’t let others or yourself say, but you need to do this or that. If you have kids, have them walk with you. If your husband gives you grief, invite him too – but only if he will be supportive. If however, either you or he is on a tight schedule where you’re working different shifts or one of you works two jobs, then on the weekend make a few casseroles for the days where either of you can just put it in the oven.

Take that 15 minutes of your sacred time and if anyone gives you grief, you tell them that I need to take time to unwind from work so I can be my best for you. And this will be totally true because you do need wind-down time and a walk after work is one of the best things you can do for yourself. It clears your mind and gives you energy to get on with your evening.

Keep up the good work….

Some Assistance

Amy Kathryn,

I understand your pain. There are other factors, besides diet and exercise, that can absolutely prevent you from losing weight. The toxins in our food and air alone enter our bodies everyday. So our bodies build a layer of fat to protect our internal organs from the toxins. Also, are you taking any digestive enzymes? They help to give us that full feeling and can even help to reduce carb and sugar cravings.
