After many years of wanting to – I finally did it. Drove out into the country in the August heat – the air coming in the windows like a child’s warm breath in my face. Found a sloping hill in the middle of nowhere. Lie back on a quilt in the singing summer twilight – the sweet smell of green things settling for the night all around me. The sun slipping inch by hot inch beyond the horizon and the stars appearing – one by one and then, suddenly, everywhere. A strong arm for a pillow and a wise and gentle astronomer lying next to me. The beauty and calm is something I will always have a special small place to hold. A memory nestled in right next to my heart.
