Affordable housing for our working class 1 year ago

is quickly becoming a crisis around the country. One of the rights we have been able to enjoy living in the United States is the ability to own our own homes. Sadly, we are losing the ability to do this even though we are working harder than ever.

This morning the Dallas Morning News lead story is about the affordable housing crisis:

“Dallas is the ninth-largest city in the U.S., and it’s not getting any smaller. Within 30 years, the city could add 500,000 more people. The question, then, for a city already lacking 30,000 units of affordable housing: Where are they all going to live?”

This is a very timely goal that I sure could use alot of help to accomplish.

Comments:

Sessygail is tired of working so hard...but what's a girl to do?

So how do you do this?

In a creative and cost-effective way? (I ask because I am working on a project related to housing right now and one of the questions is about non-financial incentives!)

Tax abatements are a good thing to check out.

I know some cities are encouraging urban revitalization projects from non-profits and developers donating city owned property for affordable housing. (Doesn’t look like Dallas is doing from this newspaper article – but I’m not sure.)

HUD has a major program in place for revitalization and affordable housing money that doesn’t get used every year. It is part of their annual budget.

Rural Housing programs and city and state bonds can be used too.

Non-financial incentives? That would probably fall under a non-profit type of organization like Habitat for Humanity.

What kind of housing project are you working on?

Texas Lin has gotten 2 cheers on this entry.
