study "studying" (read all 2 entries…)
Learning to study at age 33. 2 years ago

I’ve decided to dedicate the next couple of months to learning how to study. When I was growing up parents, teachers- everybody, kept saying, “Stephanie, you need to study more.” And over and over I kept trying to explain that I didn’t know how.

The conversations would go like this:

“Read it”
“I don’t get it”
“Then read it again”
“I still don’t get it”

Soon after this point I’d start pretending I understood things I didn’t because I was frustrated and embarrassed. But doing this caused me to get even more lost thus causing me to fall further and further behind.

I knew that I was doing something wrong- or should I say not doing something right. I knew the “smart” students knew something I didn’t; some techniques or something. This was confirmed at the age of 21 when I heard about “mnemonics” for the first time. I knew it! I knew there was a trick and I’m sure there are more.

Since I’m now an adult, I guess that means I’m now my own parent and my own teacher. Thank God for the Internet and libraries. Let the path to discover begin. And anyone who wants to come along for the ride or simply watch the show your welcome.

Looking into things

This is a most encouraging post. It is about choosing freedom.

I want tell you now that I think most things that I’ve seen written about learning is wrong, and that the school system doesn’t work for the reason that people think it does.

I hope you have a lot of fun learning how to study!

...and thank you for the encouraging reply.

Typing this post was a little embarrassing and to be honest I was halfway expecting some flippant and sarcastic remarks. But it will be worth it if even one struggling kid reads these posts and learns from the journey I’m taking.

I admire your courage!

Inspiring

I remember learning to learn – it was a long, long, time ago – the best book I’ve read was How to Read a Book, by Mortimer J. Adler & Charles Van Doren. It was originally written in 1940 by Adler and revised and updated by Van Doren in 1972. I don’t know if it’s been updated since, or even if it’s still in print, but I totally recommend it if you can find it!

Thanks, I’ll check it out.
