Our school had a motto, ‘Esse Quam videri’, oddly enough, this is the same motto as North Carolina. It was ironic that the principal in my final years there was only interested in all of the students conforming to her iron fisted rule (okay, maybe there is a little bit of youthful revisionism going on there, but seriously, she wanted all the students to be the same). In any case, Esse Quam Videri, if you haven’t already googled it, means, to be, rather than to seem. A very cool motto no doubt and I would say that for most of the history of the school, quite apropos. In any case, the school is no more.
Now, on to our potential motto. ‘que es mi dios la libertad’. It isn’t latin, true, but it isn’t english. It is taken from a poem (yep, from my spanish reader). I was taken with it. I like the way they say it. English is, My god is freedom. The poem is ‘Canción del pirata’ by José de Espronceda. I think taking our motto from a pirate song is a good start. Thoughts? Feelings?
Or it could be our secret callsign. Someone could say, ‘que es mi dios la lbertad’, and the response is ‘mi ley, la fuerza y el viento’ (my law is force and the wind). All of this said over a guttering candle in the back of a rickety canal front dive, 2 shots of scotch on the table and 2 mugs of what may very well be some ale. Only then could we get down to cult business…
