I may be old-fashioned but I think these qualities are not as highly valued as they once were. As a youngster I remember being taught to be polite and to respect my elders. It saddens me to see and hear about so many incidents today where the opposite characteristics are on display.

What can be done to reverse this trend?

It's funny...

...while I fully agree, it isn’t a new problem. Once while pulling floorboards in my house, I found a newspaper from the 1950s. In it, they were complaining about the children not respecting their elders etc.etc.

It was quite eye-opening.

I think there are good kids and bad kids, and in-between kids… maybe you just notice the bad kids more often as you grow older?
