Close Guantanamo:

You can go to this page to send an e-mail to GW (for US citizens) or to your US ambassador (for friends around the world) to close Guantanamo.

And if closed, what do we do with the folks "vacationing" there?

I heard a pretty interesting piece on NPR a couple weeks ago about this very thing.

I forget the analyst’s name, but he was saying that a certain number need to remain in custody…but that there were virtually no places to keep them here, largely due to security concerns.

A certain additional number could be let go right this minute, but their own countries won’t take them back, nor can they find another country who wants them. (Can’t imagine why not…)

So if it’s closed what to do with these folks?

Oh, sure, a number of them could just be dragged out in the street and shot in the head, but what about the rest of ‘em?

No place to keep them?

Hell, there’s always North Dakota. Plenty of room there.

If I understood this guy correctly...

...legally they’d need to “leave” the military judicial system and “enter” the federal one…which would dictate them being held at federal prisons.

They would need to be segregated from the rest of the pieces of shit already there and there, again apparently, isn’t room for them, necessitating spending huge amounts of money and time to build and modify…plus…there are concerns about their peace-loving muslim brothers and sisters trying to break them out of prison, plots have already been discovered and foiled, and that is looked on as generally negative.

(Notice how I’m not espousing a position here, but merely discussing the options? And you guys thought I couldn’t be neutral…)

Would being transferred

to federal prisons mean that they would all have actual charges levied against them? I’m thinking those who haven’t been charged with anything could (Get this:) be released!

At this point, i don’t believe that reform in Guantanamo is gonna happen. If true reform were to occur, closure wouldn’t be necessary, but i can’t trust that it will. It’s pretty darn easy to hide injustice from the American press when it’s occurring on a base on an island that’s closed to Americans in general.

Sorry to get on my soapbox, but

I’m just sayin’ . . . .

I guess I'm a bit torn about this.

If there are folks there that are just folks, then, sure, let ‘em leave.

(The ones that aren’t wanted back by their own country could stay as guests of Fidel…)

Clearly, not everyone there is a poor downtrodden goat herder from Kabul. Some are real pieces of shit.

Why don’t we just drag those out into the street and shoot ‘em in the head?

(Well, we’ve solved that one, eh?)

hunnypie has gotten 2 cheers on this entry.
