Alright.
So.
Here’s my latest drawing.
I spent two hours on it last night, but I still don’t think it’s that good.
Tips?
Critique?
Anything?
...
Throw me a frickin’ bone here.
(Austin Powers reference, yes.)
This is on my DeviantArt, too.

Go look at it there so you can see it a little bigger.
Peace.

Hey Heroin-On
I checked out your Deviant Art thingie. I really liked the one named: “Questioning” and “Gerard-ish” I think it was. Anyway, if you REALLY want to be critiqued, here goes… (just remember, I can’t do animation) The only problem I see is that it isn’t DARK enough. Do you have pens/markers, or just draw in pencil? I have seen how some cartoonists will lightly sketch in the drawing, then come back and use pen/markers over top of it.
Like I said, I do pencil portraits, but I’m REALLY picky about everything having to be realistic looking. So I’m not the best at helping w/animation. Looks like you’re doing pretty good so far!
...................edit a little later…...........
Never mind, I went back and looked at it again, and found the ones that you DID ink in later. LOL They look MUCH better with the inky dink I think.
Mwhaha.
Thanks!!
I try to ink things when I can.
But every now and then I ink and then I’m just like “Shxt, now it looks crappy, why’d I do that?”
I used to try and make everything really, you know, REAL.
But I kinda gave up because I SUCK at it.
Being on DeviantArt doesn’t always help lol.
Because I’m always like browsing other people’s stuff and thinking “Jesus, why can’t I do that??”

^^Perfect example.
But I’m trying to get better.
Alright, peace out.
Oh WOW!
I just checked out your pencil sketch up there, and it’s GREAT! You don’t SUCK, man! Practice makes perfect, ya know. I used to draw things that looked almost EXACTLY like that one. I am lucky to have a REAL artist in my family who has taught me A LOT! (my Aunt) I also took a summer art/photography class at our local Community College last summer.
The whole trick to drawing in graphite is: BLENDING TORTILLONS. I used to use my oily fingertip for blending… (not good idea) If you aren’t familiar with them… they come in all sizes. They are like rolled up pieces of paper with points that you use to blend the pencil lines.
The BIGGIEST tip is to make sure you have PLENTY OFSHADOW, and PLENTY OFHIGHLIGHT. Make the shadow as black as possible, etc. This will give your drawings a less “flat” look; make them more realistic.
Also, there’s an artist by the name of Lee Hammond, that has booklets published about “How To” draw people. I got one in my art class. I found a guy on the internet that had a step by step guide that was great! Can’t remember where I saw it. :(
Well, you’ve shown me yours, now I’m gonna have to show you mine. I’ll let ya know when I get them posted. And I’ll join one of your goals. I think you have a drawing one…
Voot. [German-Style Woot.]
Wow, you’re lucky to have someone around to teach you things.
I pretty much taught myself.
JUST to clear it up..
I didn’t draw that>>http://tn3-2.deviantart.com/fs14/300W/i/2007/103/b/c/Gerard_Way_by_ToriHiwatari.jpg
I was putting it up as an example of things that make me wish I was a better artist.
Idk if there was any confusion on that, lol.
Maybe I’m just being blonde.
But anyways.
Yeah, I really do need to work on shadowing and lighting effects.
And, no, I’d never heard of those Blending Tortillons, I should look for those.
Because I do the same thing lol.
Blending with my fingers.
But anyways.
Hope to see some of your stuff sometime, too!
Peace out.
Giiiiiiiiiiirl....
YOUMUST GET TORTILLONS, if you want to do ANY blending AT ALL. They also comes in different sizes like this
They are also called “Blending Stumps”, or “Blending Cones”... You can find them at any Art Supply store or even at Arts & Crafts stores in the drawing pencils/paper area.
The bigger ones are used for doing large areas like “hair”, etc., and the ones with the tiny points, can be used in small areas like “eyes”. For example, if you are drawing hair, you use your pencil, then blend with the torty, then go over it again with pencil… Repeat until you have the effect that you want. Then I usually go back with a kneaded eraser and pick out highlights, etc. The whole trick is _layering.)
My Art Instructor also taught us to take a pencil and scribble real hard on a scrap sheet of paper, then gently rub the pointy end of the tortillon in the graphite, then draw with the TORTILLON ITSELF. You would do this if you have an area where you don’t want ANY hard lines at all. I only use this technique occasionally.
BTW, I can’t believe I forgot. I finally got around to posting a few of my portraits on here. I’ll go find the linky dink and come back and edit this, adding it at the bottom. Be back in a flash.
...................edit later…...........
Here it is…
While you’re there, check out an artist named “Shelly” that left comments on there. She has links to her website. Her work is AWESOME!!! She’s also been giving me tips on there. So you can check those out too!
BTW, sorry I didn’t realize you didn’t draw the Gerard thing. But I swear my stuff used to look JUST LIKE THAT, until I took a summer course at our Community College, and of my aunt helps me LOADS of course. Our work looks SO much alike, you can’t hardly tell the difference.
I see great potential in you! All you need is the right tools, tips and practice. (and quit saying you suck, cause you don’t) I think I told you before… get yourself one of those books by Lee Hammond. OR, I just bought my cousin a book on drawing Anime at Barnes & Noble for Christmas. Lots of good tips in there.
Sorry about such a long entry. I get overly-excited when it comes to art…
I don't know why my photos are screwing up today...
I put a picture of apackage of tortillons on that other entry and it went POOF! This is the third time this has happened today. I’m gonna try it again and see what the deal is.
.........edit….....
It worked this time. What’s the dealio?
