get out of debt
it's killing me but... 2 years ago

It’s hard being in a serious (as in, looking for rings) relationship with someone who has good credit and knows how to save money when your credit and savings suck. So I decided I need to get out of debt. So far I have:

-consolidated school loans and requested a forebearance. As long as you keep in contact with them they’re cool.

-got my free credit report to check any errors. Also, you can write the credit bureau check to see if the info is accurate. I wrote about a few old accounts and 1 i didn’t remember and they took them off. Sweet!

-got my credit score. It’s so sad (i almost cried). but at least i know what I have to do. the Suze Orman package at myfico.com is the best deal BTW.

-set up payments w/people I owed. This part is killing me but I will have paid off 2 things by Oct so i’m kinda happy. And if you owe a dept store they usually make a deal that you can get a new card once you’ve paid off old debt so it will look like you have better credit.

Now, can anyone help me budget?

Thanks!

awesome progress

Sounds like you are really confronting your situation.

I actually don’t believe in budgets. I am a huge fan of Your Money or Your Life by Joe Dominguez and Vicky Robin. In it there are several steps you can take to really change your thinking about spending so that you can get to the point where you are always asking yourself if it’s worth it to you to spend on that particular item – regardless of if you have budgeted $50 for clothing, do you like that pair of jeans? It’s really helped me out a lot.

A lot of other people like Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover but I haven’t read it.

Good luck and good luck keeping up this progress!
