I'm in Prague on holiday 2 years ago

And I nearly had a problem.
I am gluten intolerant not coeliac.

I found some lovely looking rice cakes and some chocolate covered ones too in a supermarket. Then next to these I found other rice cakes that looked like they had the word rice on them and realised that (after looking more carefully and doing my pattern-recognition language stuff from other labels etc) that the ones I saw first where puffed wheat cakes! eek

Oh yeah, you always have to double-check foreign stuff… I got something wrong in Dubrovnik. Unfortunately, I only noticed it two days later, wondering why I felt so strange and tired… Products and labeling of the countries will also be an important issue in the guide book I’m planning.

Hey, have you checked the country life stores and the restaurant in Prague? =)

Oh man!

I looooove Prague! My family on my mother’s side is Czech (or they were, before they were all killed in the Holocaust) and I feel so at home there. I wish I’d known you were going, I know some amaaaazing veggie restaurants. Tellmetellmetellme you went to that cute little tea shop Dobrá čajovna, down the alley off Wenceslas Square. I’ve just Googled it and been disturbed to find out it’s a chain, but no matter, it’s sooo relaxing there.

I've never been to Prague..

.. but one of the things that puts me off going to places where I can’t speak the language is that I can’t eat wheat.. however statrting with the UK would be a good step… just getting cafe’s to label their ingredients and having knowledgeable waiting & kitchen staff. I went for a celebration meal in a michelin starred place recently and the staff were very helpful, however despite that and specifically checking with the lovely waiter, my dessert still came with a biscuit on top which I bit into thinking it was chocolate.

PurpleHeather has gotten 5 cheers on this entry.
