5. How "duiker" is really pronounced 2 years ago

Husband and I have always pronounced it “DWEEK-er” when we saw these cute little guys in zoos, but we had a revelation last night: duikers live in South Africa (among other places), and the word “huis” is pronounced “house” in Dutch, which is similar to Afrikaans, so maybe we’ve been messing up.

Turns out it’s DIKE-er. D’oh! Still cute though.

hi there, the duiker is really difficult to pronounce, I think I am absolutely unable to find anEnglish word which would illustrate the sound… I was in Malawi two months ago and saw one but couldn’t say I saw it, it became the “D-animal”...
