At camp this past summer, everyone’s car was a stick. I guess it’s a Northeastern thing, but I felt ignorant not knowing how. Also, I could never be DD, so I felt guilty. But honestly, I think it’s just something that would come in handy to know anyway.

An ex of mine wanted me, when I was in the market for a car, to get a stick. I think I might even have been able to learn it (I’ve certainly driven a few, in time of great need), but then I realized that I live in San Francisco. Nothing looks quite as un-manly as someone burning out a clutch on California Street because he was trying to be manly by driving stick… I had this image of reverse-rear-ending people all up the hill.
Sigh. So I never learned, and now, probably never will!
