go out on "date nights" with my spouse on a regular basis
Or if you want to stay in...

If cost, or traveling, is a big concern, there is still plenty you can do:

  • Cook a meal together – She’s the real chef, so I took orders and tried to flirt. Okay, the meal wasn’t perfect, but we had a lot of fun.
  • Find a game you both like to play – For my wife and I, we like Chess and Rummikub. Sometimes we have to institute the “no getting mad or frustrated, hey remember it’s date night!” rule.
  • Agree on a movie – I was out of ideas, then I started using Netflix. She gets to pick a cheesy horror movie one week, I get to pick a boring drama the next.
  • Stay in the same room together – sometimes, we’re really swamped at work and have to take stuff home. Although not the most glamorous date night, just working side by side in the same room can be fun. It’s kind of like studying in the library together like in high school or college.

Any other ideas?

Some great ideas!

When my kids were young and money was tight…

I did a few things like:

1. Spread out a blanket and bring out some wine and cheese while the kids nap.
Go for a ride in a rowboat in a city park’s pond (might include renting costs).
2. Draw a bubble bath after the kids have gone to bed….leave little notes or clues as to where you can be found – have some soft music playing and candles lit.
3. Spend 5 minutes writing in a journal or a love letter to each other – trade and read each other’s and talk then.
4. If you have two computers, get on IM and flirt. Sparks will fly! ;-}
5. Take a cooking class together.
6. Meet each other for lunch (requires babysitter) or picnic at park.
7. If you have some bucks to spend, renting a hotel room for an hour is also very steamy.
8. Buy a book that has those envelopes you open – kinda like a mystery – and then you open the envelope and do what they say to do.
9. Go for a chair massage together – or learn to do it yourselves and enjoy.
10. Mini golf or video arcades are sometimes fun.
11. Making homemade ice cream can be fun also.

That’s just my $.02!

For a while....

my husband and I made dinner together on Saturday nights, the recipes had to be something new to try. We’d play music in the background. He wasn’t much of a chef either, but he put effort into it, and we both enjoyed it. We’ve also done the movie thing, alternating who gets to choose the movie, and that worked well. Games we enjoy playing together…. scrabble and cribbage.

joseph has gotten 3 cheers on this entry.
