stop hoarding
Hanging onto Life 2 years ago

I grew up with my mother saving everything. My dad used to joke around about her being a pack rat. It was cute, when I was a kid. Now I am an adult and it is actually causing friction at home, in the home, with myself, my husband and I definately don’t want my kids to learn not to throw anything away.

The problem with this? The problem is that if it is broken, it is in the trash. If it didn’t make it to the trash, then it means it is perfectly fine. Why would I throw away perfectly good stuff?

I have held onto everything from toys, books, clothes, baby furniture and all baby stuff. I’m not planning on having anymore children.

I have held onto all this stuff because I figured that someone could use it.

I don’t know how to get rid of stuff and it has taken over my basement, garage and miscellaneous clutter around the house.

Just wondering what everyone with or without a hoarding issue does with your stuff and how to conquer this.

Getting Rid of Stuff

One way to think of it is that it’s better to release those “perfectly good” things (like the baby things) so that other families can make use of them. If you give them to your favorite charity for resale someone else can benefit and you free up some space at home. Good luck to you!

you're right..

other families do need those things. so give all of the thing your not going to use anymore to thte salvation army or goodwill.

Advice & My Problem(s)

I agree- for the “perfectly good” things you have but don’t need- like baby items, books- sell them- list them on ebay or craigslist or have a garage sale. Or donate them to a charity. I am sure someone else would love to have those things if they were in a good condition- the problem is getting them from you to the person who wants/needs them.

For me, it’s like I have things that I don’t really want anymore, but to me they represent spent money & I’d just like to get some of that back through resale- things like clothes or bags.

The other category of stuff/junk that I have is papers. That’s a bit harder, because they are only useful to me. It’s just like some of it is important and it’s time consuming to sort through it all. Old magazines, though, might be interest to someone else.

The things represent time and money spent. Schoolwork for example represents my hard work and time (heaven knows I don’t remember half the stuff, it doesn’t exist in my mind, just on the assignment I worked on). Other things I have represent money spent- books, clothes- and getting rid of it for free would be like throwing away money to me. That’s what’s difficult. Also, just having too much stuff in general & wanting to keep all of it.
