Have you tried doing as many as you can, and instead of stopping, just hold yourself up in pushup position until you feel ready again and see how many more you can do. it makes a difference in how many you can do without stopping at all.
Though normally, I am completely beat when I stop. But I’ll give that a go.

np, i learned it from my totally hard core PE teacher a couple years ago. easy to pass on knowledge like that. she wouldn’t let us just drop when we were done, we had to hold the push up while everyone else was still going and then try to join in again.
and even if you can’t do anymore, just holding yourself up uses some of the same muscles and strengthens them. so, even if you wait a minute and try and fall, it’s still better than just stopping right away.
