carve a crochet hook (read all 3 entries…)
crochet 4 years ago

i have an ancient apple tree on my property where i’m building my cabin. My sister is stuck in Calleyfornia, and because of health, cannot come visit. I want to carve her a crochet hook from a branch of that apple tree. I think it would mean alot to her. But i don’t know anything about crochet hooks. For example, can i smooth say 3” at the end of the branch and leave the bark on the rest?

wow.

What a wonderful thing to do for your sister.

I think your idea will probably work. A standard crochet hook is about 5 to 7 inches long, and, depending on your technique and what sort of stitch you’re doing, you need about half of the hook, on the business end, to be smooth enough for yarn to slip over it without snagging. The non-business end could stay rough, as long as you think it would be comfortable to grip.

The tip of the hook will need extra attention – it just has to be curved enough to grab a loop of yarn, but that inner curve will probably be tricky to smooth.

You might also think about lacquering it, for extra slideability.

Reading your idea has made my day. I hope it works out.
