"Curb Your Enthusiasm" (this is more of a preview than a review) 2 years ago

The new season of Larry David’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” starts on HBO this weekend, which is good enough reason for me to re-subscribe.

Curb is one of the funniest shows on TV. If you’ve never seen it, it’s a bit like “Seinfeld” in Los Angeles, only there’s no Jerry, just Larry David, who was the basis for the George Costanza character.

Like Seinfield, Curb is a comedy of bad manners, where a perceived slight or a an offhand comment or an uncomfortable situation ends up getting blown out of proportion. Larry gets himself in so much trouble, and it’s hilarious watching him try to wriggle out of it. The show is full of stars like Richard Lewis, Ted Danson and Mel Brooks, who play themselves.

Larry’s partner in crime is the hysterically funny actor Jeff Garlin, who plays his manager, Jeff Greene. The beautiful and talented Cheryl Hines plays Larry’s wife, Cheryl. (Don’t confuse her with real-life ex-wife Laurie David, though.)

If you’re not sure you’ll like Curb enough to get HBO, you might try renting DVDs of an earlier season.

Comments:

I love this show

It is one of my favorites. Last season I noticed it was a bit different. It seemed like everything was more over the top. I liked the previous seasons better than I liked last season. Did you also notice the difference?

We think alike

I did notice a difference, and things did seem more over the top and even forced a bit. Like Larry was trying too hard.

The earlier seasons had a simplicity about them. One of my favorites is the “Thor” episode in season 2, especially the scenes between Larry and Wanda Sykes when she accuses him of being an “ass-man”. The dog episodes have been classics, too.

I don’t know whether, based on the earlier success, Larry decided to turn it up a notch. There’s nothing wrong with trying to make something even better. But the chain of events becomes a little bit unbelievable.

I will say this Sunday’s episode, where Larry dates the doctor, was very good. It was complicated, yet didn’t seem forced.

And despite this criticism, I still believe Curb Your Enthusiasm is the funniest show on TV now.

What are your favorite episodes?

That is it

I am glad that you know what I mean. It seemed a bit forced and the situations were more unbelievable. The show is still great! But I like it better when it is a little more relaxed.
Honestly I don’t have a favorite episode. I have many favorite moments that I remember. The My Favorite ‘Aunt’ episode (where they had the c instead of the a). The one where Larry gets a hair in his throat, the dinner with the friends, where the couple always gets out of leaving a tip. I love it when Wanda is yelling at Larry. I love Larry’s wife, she is the best, oh and Jeff too! See, it’s too hard to pick a favorite.
I haven’t seen the current season yet because we don’t have cable:( I will have to wait until it’s on DVD.

Have you seen that show called AD MEN? I hear it’s good.

Taylor is trying to juggle two house payments.

I haven’t seen AD MEN, just heard a little bit about it, but not enough to watch it.

I have a lot of favorite moments, too – many of the ones you mentioned. Watching Larry and Susie fight is great fun.

I also like it when Jeff says, “That’s a big bowl of wrong.”

We don’t have HBO all the time anymore, just for “The Wire” and “Curb” now that “The Sopranos” is over.

Big bowl of wrong..that’s funny!

Taylor has gotten 1 cheer on this entry.
