A few days ago, I was driving through an under priveledged neighborhood and I saw a Cool Aid stand with two boys waiting for someone, anyone, to stop and buy a drink. I slowed down and the boys (aged about 7 or 8) perked up immediately.
The mother was only 20ft away and was sitting on the porch. Having stopped I could see that these folks were pretty down on their luck. It was HOT and I saw a couple of window AC units in windows, but all the windows and front door were open at 1:00 in the afternoon.
Drinks were 25 cents each. I asked for two drinks, they asked for 50 cents. I handed them a $10 bill. They yelled to the Mom that they needed change. She came to my truck and asked if I had any coins as they had no money. I said that the Cool Aid was so good that it was worth $5 a glass. She was rather taken aback.
I drove away and saw the look of disbelief in the rearview mirror.
