I think I just may have a hoarding disorder

(This is not my mess. Photo is from the article referenced. I don’t have a camera yet.)

My mess is not as bad as my grandmother’s—stuff stacked floor to ceiling everywhere, with little pathways through the mess. But I could be headed that way if I don’t change. Right now the problem is limited mostly to the 2 rooms in the house, my old office and my current office. My file cabinets are full, and the recent paper is stacked on the floor.

The article says that, if I have this disorder, then my decision-making skills are not functioning well, which sounds about right. I really struggle with what to do with each piece of paper, and I have a lot of trouble throwing stuff away.

Squalor Survivors

Check out http://www.squalorsurvivors.com/ – obviously your mess is probably not as bad as some on that site, but I think the site is helpful and informative for people with these tendencies (myself included). Be sure to check out the Overcoming section, which has a lot of great info and resources.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for this link...

Somehow I missed this back in December, or didn’t pay it much attention, but I found it again yesterday. This is a very useful and informative site.

I think my squalor level is somewhere between levels 1 & 2. I think my grandmother and aunt were definitely at level 3. Maybe level 4 by the end. Seeing how it affected their lives, I REALLY don’t want to go there.

Thanks again, and good luck to you too.
