i took 3 yrs of american sign language as my foreign lang requirement during undergrad. i’m probably a bit rusty since i don’t get to use it often (lose it or use it right?) but i’d recommend it to anyone. it’s really not that difficult and it is truly rewarding. plus, it opens up a world to people you otherwise would never have communicated with. this is mosdef worth doing!!

sign language!!
i have always wanted to learn american sign language. the other day i was riding the muni with a friend who was attempting to teach me the asl alphabet. we quickly attracted the attention of an wrinkled, toothy man without pants who came to regale us with tales of experiences in nam and as a transient migrant in northern california. BEST MUNI RIDE EVER!!
i think i am inspired to start learning asl now.
anyway, i know that you said that you don’t get to use it often, but have you had any asl conversations recently? what was the most interesting asl conversation you’d had? i feel like there would be a lot of them, since the people who choose (or need) to learn asl must have pretty interesting personalities and life stories themselves!
wow, i didn’t realize there was a comment here. ya know i wish i had some good stories but i really don’t. i’ve met some great people attending deaf bingos but that was quite some time ago. sadly, i’ve only used ASL to say things in pass like “excuse me”. but hey at least i was able to do that :P
i’m sure living in norcal (SF?) you’ve had some really interesting life experiences. i’m jealous! :)
btw, good luck in your learning endeavors!
