I haven’t added any new fitness goals for 2 reasons.

1. I have focused too strongly on those because they have been successful, and correspondingly I have slacked on the others. This 43 things website should be set up like a wack-a-mole game (for those that don’t know this game, I am sure you local carnival has a similar one, probably just a different name).

2. I did the adventure race the week after my triathlon. I felt some strain on my knee in the triathlon, but I still went ahead and did the adventure race the next week. It was a team event so I really had no choice but to stick it out. I did very well, I was surprised how fit I was becoming, a 3km ocean kayak, a 6km mountain bike and a 3km trail run. All nice and short, a lot of vertical but nothing too hard. I didn’t let my team down by any stretch. In any case, by the time I was heading out on the trail run I began to feel some tightness in my knees. By the time I was done, there was no denying that my right knee had been overused. According to my neighbour the doctor, it has something to do with liquifying cartilage or something. I think it is strain from riding the bike with bad form (yes, I do suck at that too). In any case, all it needs is rest. So, I will wait to start training for my 1/2 marathon until next week. I am supposed to run it in November, so I should have time if I am smart about this.

I am working on the live sexier. I think a lot of what would complete me; make me feel more genuine is in there. I just don’t have anything concrete yet. I have an idea and I will be adding it shortly though, I think.

I just wanted to put this down so I didn’t think I was slacking. I will also develop a next steps plan shortly. I think I need some direction moving into winter. That is what winter is for, hunkering down and doing things.

Terrific and exciting.

The tri and adventure race, back to back. You should move into the 1/2 marathon pretty without two much effort given your base that you’ve developed.

Here’s the adventure race that I’ve got my eye on for next fall: http://www.americanadventuresports.com/blackbeard.htm
My training buddies are threatening to abandon me forever over this one.

It’s probably too far from BC…I’ve never even tried to coasteer…have you?

Oh man!

That looks awesome. If I thought I could do 12 hours, I would hop a plane tomorrow. Okay, not tomorrow, although I checked the site and can’t even tell when the event is/was. I love the idea of coasteering. That sounds wild. Although around here it would be called swimming, but I am betting there is a great variety of beaches, rocks, etc in North Carolina.
If you are putting together a team for next year, I would so want to be on it!!!

Did you see that the Blackbeard one is a USARA qualifier!! The event I did was pretty mild and a great start, but that night when I was at home, a repeat of the ecochallenge was on tv. I had seen it years ago and thought I would love to do that, but I will never be in shape to do anything like that. Now, I am reconsidering. Although there is no eco challenge any more and the winners of that event don’t sleep, and I like my sleep, I am excited about adventure racing!

In any case, if you are having trouble finding a third drop me a line. Otherwise, I might have to put my own team together!

Rocky?

This is my vacation mecca. I go two or three times a year and there aren’t many rocks…but there are huge dunes and
really rough surf and I didn’t really think about that combination until you brought up the rocks. Yikes. Pick between running in big dunes or swimming in rip tides. Mmmmmm. Usually when I’m at the Outer Banks I run along the water line, with out too much problem. When the surf is up, I run inland a ways.

I’ve done a mountain bike TRI and a kayak, bike, run Tri, but no official adventure race. But with my running buddies, every race is an adventure.

Anyway. Kep training and I’ll let you know when they post the 2008 dates.

What half marathon are you doing?

sparkleman Was here for 5 minutes, but has gone again - or has he...?

Knee check

How’s it healing?

Hey Sparkleman,

Thanks for asking me. I was taking it easy for the last 3 weeks. I have been swimming. I found the coolest site for swim plans, something I need. www.swimplan.com. They give you a free plan. Awesome.

As for the knee. The pain was gone for more than a week. It really wasn’t pain, but it was telling me it wasn’t happy. So, this last week I added running back. My first run was about 15 minutes and it was great. My next run ended at about the 35 minute mark when the pain returned…

So, I told my doctor friends across the street and they told me to stop running right now. They thought I was an idiot. When they told me to stop for a little while I thought 3 weeks was enough, but apparently not. What I have is chrondomalacia patella. In normal terms, I have abused the cartilage under my knee cap and it has turned soft and is inflamed. The good news is that it is extremely common with people who just take up exercising and overdo it. J, the radiologist laughed that he couldn’t believe that I didn’t get it earlier. He sees this all the time and he says if I rest it and take about 40 ibuprofen a day, I should be fine and it won’t return. I can swim and bike all I want, just no running. S his wife, also a doctor checked my knee out and agreed with the diagnosis.

So, the half marathon I just started training for is out. This means the olympic distance triathlon in February is out, but if all goes well, I can do the sprint triathlon in February.

So, I need to find a way to build my base on the bike and in the pool.

I am a little bummed out because I really lost weight running and the pool and the bike haven’t ever even come close. So, I might not be able to keep the weight loss up or even keep the weight off. I will have to watch my diet now….shudder…

Thanks again for asking.

Sorry to hear that

I don’t think your body will forget how to run fast – you’ll be back up to speed with that quite quickly I think. If you work on the swimming and cycling over the winter you might find you can do a much stronger sprint triathlon in Feb since you’ll be concentrating on your weaker areas.

As for eating – I feel your pain :-) right now because I’m not doing much cardio, my diet is normal meals (whatever I like with wholegrains) but I keep my snacks to fruit and bio-yoghurt. Which is what I should be doing anyway, but I do like my food:

So bad, but soooo good…

Yes,

Swimming is definitely my weaker area! I do love my food as well!!

Take Care,

Actually,

There was very little pain involved. None now. I am just supposed to keep it that way. It is just the fact that I know if I feel any pain, I am setting myself back that keeps me from doing anything. So I feel like the walking wounded without much of a wound…

Thanks for thinking of me!!

Are you

slacking?

elizabethmerchant is having a great day.

Are you

slacking? (Or is that a personal question? I am rather familiar with slacking and all…)

LoL!

No, it isn’t a personal question at all. You have definitely caught me though. I feel terrible. There is no reason for me to slack, but I haven’t built up at all on my once a week workout. I am extremely busy with work and if I have any extra time, I have things to do with it, but I NEED to schedule my workout.
I hung out with M the other day and he suggested we go running together. He has another kid on the way and I can tell he has no free time right now, so I hate to drag him out for what would be an eighth of a workout for him. I think I need it though. Okay, so here is my commitment. Wednesday I am out of town on business, but Thursday I will do my little run thing that I have been putting off and Friday I will swim.
There we go, in writing. Thank you for noticing my intense slacking!

It takes one-

to know one. I slacked from August until I was totally disgusted with myself in November…eating sugar, not running, feeling flabby. I too was consumed by the evil work beast. But once I got on track, I feel so much better that I think I am more productive with work, when I work…so good luck getting back out there-the first couple of workouts are challenging!
