help my dog get rid of seperation anxiety

Madge...  — 11 months ago

is 8 months old. We’ve had her since she was 2 months. Any time either my husband or I leave the house, even if it is just to go outside for a moment, she cries something fierce and looks out the window for us. The hubby’s office is just across the street and when he goes there or when he’s there she stands at the window and just watches and waits.

I’ve played with her… in fact between the hubby and myself she is in our laps or played with nearly 4 hours a day.

Any suggestions???

No suggestions, but . . .

Madge is beautiful!

Thank you!

She’s the best dog… very sweet nature and oh my, very playful. She’s taken our older dog, Molly, and has given spunk to play to the older one.

I wonder if this is just a phase!...

Um, I’m not sure what you mean, but in the UK, “spunk” means, er, “semen”. Creating all sorts of mental imagery which I’d rather not think about.

lol

in North America, spunk = energy, active ;)

ditto!

Indeed.

Apparently in Australia – according to Neighbours, anyway – any handsome young man is known as a spunk! I mean, ew!

oh geez...

spunk in the term I used it… lively, energetic.

Okay… now to rid my mind of that image!!!

cathibeth, your dog looks very beautiful.

I love the colour of Madge’s coat! Aren’t puppies fun?

Sure, I have some suggestions

First, make sure Madge gets tons of regular exercise. Play fetch with her until she’s tuckered out, take her for walks, give her obedience training, that sort of thing.

Also, be VERY low key yourself when you leave the house or come back home. In fact, it’s best to not even greet your dog or say good-bye. Just matter-of-factly leave as if it is no big deal. A lot of people don’t realize how much anxiety they create in their dogs by their own hysterical behavior around coming and going.

In general, don’t reward (or give into) barking, whining, jumping, pawing. Reward calm, non-dependent behavior with low-key praise.

Best to you & Madge!

We do...

she does…. and that puppy can PLAY! I’ll get on the floor and wrestle her… fetch to her hearts content… walks (we’ve been reduced to spelling it so that she doesn’t get super hyper and jump on our heads).

Thank you for the suggestions!

Some of the high energy comes from the breed (Brittany). And we have another Brittany who plays with her for long long times. (They’re quite funny as they make deals with each other… “I’ll chew your ear and you can chew my paw”)

And no… we don’t make big deals about coming and going, learned that one with Molly…

As for obidence… she’s fantastic. We’re still working on sit vs. lay down, but the rest of the commands she’s got both verbally and signaling…

Any other suggestions?

Oh well

I’m afraid that exhausts my bag of dog tricks! I’ll bet the Dog Whisperer could fix her (well, you know what I mean). He knows how to handle any dog problem!

Have you considered

getting her a baby sister? I only know cats, and it worked for my older cat. He got seriously upset when my kids started going to dad’s house after the divorce….all kinds of weird behavior. I finally got him a baby brother, which worked GREAT. To my surprise, he “mothered” the critter, even carrying him around by the scruff of his neck! It’s turned out to be much easier and more fun to have 2 than one cat.

I agree . . .

I have gotten cats for other cats twice in my life, and it’s always been a good thing. I don’t think I’ll ever have another “only.”

Those are great ideas, Wren and Sherlock.

And Bendecida, maybe your breed of dog is more comfortable with being left alone?

The breed makes such a difference, plus the fact that it’s a puppy. I’ve heard about some breeds that destroy the house when they are left alone. When Buster was a puppy he’d chew on shoes, boots and the baseboards something fierce.
Now he’s ok, except for some reason, just this morning, when I got home from church, I found the inner sole out of a pair of good Timberland casual shoes that I own, all chewed up, with 50 little pieces of rubber all over the carpet at the front door! I was so ticked off at Buster. :(( Now I have to look for a replacement sole for the shoes, which were in excellent condition. Now I’m the one who is growling! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

CropTillDawn~ I don't want younger and better, I want you!

My dog does the same thing

When my mailbox was outside she would act like I was gone for DAYS! LOL! Silly girl.
My Bother got a second dog, but then he just had two big babies on his hands!

My dog likes to sit in the window and guard the house and wait for us to come home. I don’t think it hurts anything. It beats her tearing up the house. My Bothers dog showed her how to get into the trash if we are gone all day!
“Now drag the coffee grinds onto the carpet if they are gone for more than 6 hours ok.”

cathibeth has gotten 8 cheers on this entry.
