handygirl is getting back on track after a tough six weeks

knit a real, wearable, non-embarrassing sweater that fits (read all 3 entries…)

It happens to everyone eventually...  — 11 months ago

The phone rang unexpectedly, I dropped a stitch or two in my knitting and ended up with a big hole right in the middle of my front sweater panel. Multiple attempts to repair it failed because I lacked the right tools, and…I had to frog the whole thing. However, I learned two valuable lessons: how to create a really nice yarn ball, and that a sweater the correct size for me will take forever to finish. So, I’ve decided to knit this same Skully sweater for my ten-year-old stepson, instead! Four sizes smaller, possibly able to be completed by Christmas, and it still fits my goal! It just won’t be a sweater that fits ME. :-)

I am

trying to knit the skully sweater, too. If it doesn’t fit me, there is a nine-year old lad handy, and ever-willing…

Stich N Bitch

Are you talking about the Skully sweater that’s in the book ‘Stich N Bitch?’ The one with the skull and crossbones on the sleeves?

O, to dream! I will someday be able to knit my very own Skully sweater, but alas, now I am a mere fledgling needle wielder, and am still working on my damned scarf. I love that sweater!!

That's the one!

I am fledgling also. I finished my scarf (I used very thick Icelandic wool, a thin ten stitches per row, eight feet long), and a practice hat with a rat-tail.
The Skully sweater will be my first REAL knitted project. I will need a LOT of coaching, I can see that.
I am hoping to finish before snow falls.

I'm a bit behind you

I am in the middle, exactly, of my scarf, just about to add the second ball of yarn. I used AslanTrends Del Sur Merino Wool yarn, I know nothing about yarn yet. It was a great color red, and had that funky varied thickness to it, so I liked it. A little odd for my first project, as the varied thickness make it tough to tell if I am stiching right, until I got used to it.

I really want to do that sweater next, but I am going to read some more of the book, and follow their recommendations on practicing, as its worked well for me so far.

That book…I love it! It quickly abolished the ‘knitting is for grannies’ impression I had of knitting and makes the process of learning fun and interesting.

Knitting

is big in our city. We have a lot of knit cafes; they hold weekly stitch ‘n’ bitch evenings, which I plan to attend to get the help I will need during The Sweater.
I got my grey and white yarn at a yard sale. It has varied thickness, too. The scarf looks like a long thin poodle now that it is done. I can’t tell how wonky the stitches are.
For the hat I used a blend of Fair Trade alpaca, wool and silk. It’s black but has nuances of blue and brown – nuances, mind you, – it just makes the black vibrate a little.

I hope you begin your sweater soon.
