MmmmMmmmmMMmmmmm….. Tivo…....
TV as it should be, definately.
Ironically, it took Tivo for me to truely realize why I didn’t want to watch TV.
For several years, I just didn’t get TV – no cable, satellite, etc. I don’t really know why it started… probably because I was cheap. As time went on I didn’t get any TV source primarily out of momentum.
About a year ago we decided to get satellite, and Tivo while we were at it. In our rec room we have a projector set up (without TV, we were still big movie watchers), so this whole set up was on essentially a 110 inch HDTV. In most senses, it was near the ultimate TV setup.
I found several shows I liked. I got hooked on a few and watched them every chance I could.
And then I realized exactly what I was doing. I was seeking out new shows as fast as I could watch the few I found. The more I watched, the more I marked on Tivo to record because, god forbid, I go to the Tivo someday and have NOTHING RECORDED!
I stepped back and looked at the shows I was watching. The shows I felt I liked the most and wondered what would happen if I just stopped watching. Sure I’d miss out on some great shows, but life would go on. I was spending that time doing something else earlier…
Because of Tivo, I have discovered inside myself why I don’t want to watch TV. Before I did it out of habit, but now I do it out of self discovery.
My wife still watches the odd show, so the Tivo still sits there purring happily away. Good for her to want to keep it. There’s no harm in it as far as I’m concerned.
So many “no TV” people are so strongly anti-TV. I don’t really understand that sentiment. There’s some good stuff out there, and there are lots of worse things in the world than TV for most people.
