continue to homeschool my girls
I wont warehouse my children

A friend of mine called me today. She is very upset at the school district where she lives. Her daughter is attending a class that has a 42 kids in it, and one teacher, and a assistant.
Her daughter is extremely bright and the teachers wont let her test to see if she can skip a grade ahead. She is doing work at the same pace and level as the other kids in the class.
Its really frustrating for the child because she is above average for this classshe has not learned anything new. This class is not challenging her enough.

I am so glad that I have the oppurtunity to homeschool.

My eldest just started kindergarten

And I was appalled by what I saw when I assisted in class the second week. They were just forced to sit there, while they were slowly handed parts of the art project, that would normally take my 5 year old 5 minutes to do at home, this took an hour at school, which meant about half the kids spent 55 minutes just sitting on their hands. This is supposedly at one of the best schools in the city, with one of the most lauded teachers.

Another worrisome development: dd ids now pretending not to know things she’s known for the last 2 years.

I’m meeting with the teacher next week, hoping to at least set up some sort of workstation where kids can do worksheets or art, if they’re ahead or have completed a project. I’m loathe to pull her out, because she’d miss her friends so much. And we already do homeschooling or “un”schooling, but can’t say I’m very knowlegable about this. Still, I’m starting to consider home-schooling, especially if I can’t find a gifted program.

Anyone have ideas about how to start homeschooling, resources they like? I know it varies state-to-state, but do I need to register with someone?
