Still Haven't Gotten My Scale 2 years ago

What it has been more than a year, probably a year and a half since I said I would get a scale. I thought I had put back on the weight that I had lost in pursuit of this goal. Now my clothes are hanging off of me, more than they have in years. I need to get a scale in order to monitor my losses and gains.

I have over the course of the last year changed my eating habits. I now eat more organic products. Drink my tea unsweetened and have converted to whole wheat wherever possible. I also find I am not eating in anticipation of a hunger that hasn’t surfaced yet. No more, "I am eating this much so I will not be hungry later!"

Whole wheat pasta rocks!

I love it.

Great job developing good habits! I’m going to have to remember that “not eating in anticipation of hunger” thing…I do that too sometimes, when what I should be doing is eating to fill current hunger only.

Eating to Fill Hunger

I think eating to prevent hunger is more effective.

Right now I am trying to set up a schedule, including a couple of snacks for my son and I. I realize with myself, that if I wait until I am hungry I am not going to make the best decisions on what to eat. For instance I am hungry, the obvious thing is to go for the quickest relief, so it could be McDonald’s or some other fast food. For me I think the best thing will be to start planning more what to eat.

Ah I see what you mean.

Yeah, I’ve found that planning ahead is essential for me, too. I can wait until I am hungry as long as I know where my next meal/snack is coming from and as long as it’s not too much trouble to prepare it.

Waiting too long not only tempts me to make bad choices…it influences me to keep eating after I am full.

Sooo...

Keep up the good work!

I think that it is probably best for you to have no scales, for now.
Lifestyle choices are more important and more effective long term.
Like being organized, it is a state of being… a habit, something that is never finished.
Living a healthy lifestyle is just that, a lifestyle that you are living today!

I have read that nutrients effect hunger triggers(also thirst does). Therefor, Eating six small meals with polyunsaturated fats(sunflower seeds, etc.) and fruits or veggies for sugars and vitamins will keep your mind and body more focused. I learned this while training with www.teamintraining.org for a marathon.

I became more familiar with how my mind and body felt as all of the nutrients and salts were used up while training for 1-2 hours+, and how quickly I could feel both mentally and physically the recovery when I added salt or nutrients back. Neat stuff, but you are definitely on the right track. Making different choices about food will definitely help control the craving triggers. Best of Luck!

Any hints?

When I make whole wheat pasta, it always tastes like flour. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

Maybe it's the brand?

Some are definitely better than others. Some taste really bland! (kind of like flour, to me) Others have more salt added, which helps. Give me a day or two and I can come up with some thoughts on the specific brands…

Also…are you cooking it long enough? Whole wheat does tend to take longer than regular.

bibliomane oommmmmmmmmm

must be bold!

I agree with Funniculee about some brands being better than others, but I think that the key is pairing whole wheat pasta with strong flavored sauces and toppings. One needs something bold to balance it out, like super garlicky tomato sauce.

Thanks!

I tried this tonight and we really liked it. I added heat to an otherwise ordinary sauce with half of a chipotle pepper!

Well

I like the Ronzoni Healthy Harvest. I don’t usually make it by itself, but I try to use it in baked ziti and such. I have cooked it successfully with sauce or meat sauce. I would try the Barilla brand as well. Their pasta overall to me seems better than the rest.

If I come across something I like better, maybe on an upcoming trip to Wholefoods, I will surely give a shout.

I think Funniculee and Bibliomane are both right. I think the key to offsetting some of the flavor issues with eating right can be to mix other flavors, try to reach a bit more.

Any of you got some pasta recipes they’d like to share. Perhaps we can improve on them together.

wren is mightier than grief.

I eat

this awesome pasta called Barilla Plus pasta. It is the best! It is really good for you. It’s multi-grain, and it contains omega-3s and protein. And it tastes delish! Yum, yum, yum – wish I had a bowl right now!

Thanks, everyone!

Good hints! I’m looking forward to trying some new pasta brands and new recipes for bold sauces.

Thanks, again!

Barilla Plus worked for me. And cooking it longer like funniculee said and using a bold sauce like bibliomane said. I made a really nice pasta dish! And my husband agrees.

Still No Scale

I went to Target today, just for the scale and I did not find one. They were on sale so I will try later in the week.
