Last year I completed my first trip to the African continent, an overland journey through Southern Africa. I crossed the border into Namibia over the Gariep (Orange) River and made camp on its banks; this was an ideal spot with lovely green grassed areas (which was an unusual sight in Namibia) but provided a perfect bed for the night. Sleeping under the stars is one of the area’s greatest selling points.

As the wind danced through the trees, it had a wonderful calming effect that sleeping was easy, as it was like someone singing a lullaby. One of the best night’s sleep I’ve ever had…
