this interesting article on the topic of grammar in the workplace. It specifically mentions apostrophes, and the discussion that follows is quite lively. I recommend it.

I have to say, with a sigh,
that righteous grammarphiles who sound off about these things in their posts (such as comments after the above article, as well as some blogs I’ve browsed) invariably make syntactical mistakes along the way. It’s an area in which it’s hard to be consistently righteous! I’m all for people becoming more careful with their language, but we should all have humility & a sense of humor in the process. Standard English is a gargantuan organic construct, continually shifting, & it’s impossible to be always “correct.”
Greengrocer’s apostrophes are silly & useless, & I think we should tickle them & make them run away to find their proper homes.

While it may be
difficult to be consistently righteous, there are many in the present Administration who find it quite easy to be consistently self-righteous.

(well, I think we should
tickle George W. & make him run away to his proper home too, now that you mention it.)
True
People who complain about grammar do make mistakes themselves, sometimes in the middle of a complaint, but there’s nothing wrong with at least making an effort to learn the rules.
Apostrophes aren’t actually that difficult, so I don’t understand why people have such trouble with them. The first thing I saw in the supermarket this morning was a display stand with “balloon’s”, “round balloon’s” and “variety balloon’s” at the entrance. It was one of those “aaargh” moments.
