Make the entrance to my home beautiful (read all 3 entries…)
The Entrance Way

I’ve been needing to renovate this area for a while, but been putting it off because it’s going to cost money I don’t want to spend. But I’m tired of having a run down looking entrance. It’s depressing to come home to and I don’t particularly want people to see it when I answer the door.

Problems to solve:

  • carpet on the stairs is badly stained and torn
  • hole in the wall from by confused elderly dog
  • outdated brass fixtures
  • parquet flooring is worn and moisture damaged
  • front door is boring
  • outside trim around front door was badly painted
  • overgrown shrub
  • baseboards looking pretty rough
  • bannister needs repair where it connects to wall
  • walls are undecorated
  • family items getting left all over the floor
  • windows were caulked with something dreadful that has seeped
  • mail box is ugly
  • door mat is too small
  • needs something to dress up the front walk

I have one of those houses where you just keep wondering “what were the last owners thinking?” I’ve already painted the walls a nice warm green, but before that they were dark orange to waist height, medium orange to the ceiling and a strip of wallpaper around the middle that had a turquoise print on it. I really wish I’d taken a “before” picture before I painted.

Union Jack?

That is the most bizarre thing to have on the ceiling. I like your verb, our previous owners were Bakers and I think I’ll start to refer to their efforts as “Baked”.

We moved in when the kids were infant and 2 years and immediately had a flood. That really got in the way of fixing the place up. So I feel like we’ve put up with things I don’t like for way too long. But at least I got some of the worst rooms painted.

One of the “baked” things they did was put in all the baseboards with right angle cuts at the corners. And slanted the boards at an angle to accomodate the tile in front of the fireplace.

That would work

since everything they did was ‘half right”, “half finished” and “half assed”.

BTW

I keep forgetting to tell you I checked out that blog and she’s done a really great job. But my husband is getting tired of watching me salivate over your kitchen! My gosh that is gorgeous. I assume that wasn’t “Kerred” together?

Absnasm is mostly elsewhere.

Good grief, no offence taken.

How revolting. Apart from it looking awful, I think most people here would consider anyone who painted a Union Jack on their bedroom ceiling to be some kind of far-right race-hate white-power lunatic.

Grass cloth wallpaper? Like… astroturf?

No, not that bad

I had grass cloth wallpaper once too. I think it was quite “high end” in the eighties. It’s all fake, but imagine something the colour of chaffs of wheat. Long blades of slender grass attached (sewn?) vertically into wallpaper. It doesn’t look like lawn, just a textured wallpaper. The problem with it, besides looking dated, is it gets all dusty and hard to clean.

And my mum’s dog just loved to rub it’s anus against it.

Absnasm is mostly elsewhere.

That last sentence is one of the best I've seen on here.

Fantastic.

I think I know what you mean. Kind of looks like a tiki hut or something. The kind of stuff they make beach mats out of. Yeah, not nice.
