training, or personality  — 9 months ago

Teulu has been a horrid boy lately…mostly because he is feeling better so he is getting a bit sassy.

but today I went to sleep and he woke me about 3 hours later. I thought he wanted to go out, but instead I found I had forgotten to lock the apartment door, and due to the strong winds off the coast the door had blown open.

I was really pleased that he did not simply take himself for a walk, leaving me to sleep blissfully and vulnerably with the door open.
But is that training, or personality. ? Either way, I’m happy with my Sassy boy.

Comments:

He looks like a very healthy dawg anyway!

Oh yes

the 7 miles he and I walk on a daily basis keeps him that way.

Jessy is off to work today!

Dogs are smart . . .

I’ll bet he knew that the open door was not right, that it left you unprotected, and his instinct was to protect you. So instead of taking advantage of the open door, he came to wake you up!

He’s a good boy. :)

I'd

like to look at it that way, but somehow it seems a little too much for him. He isn’t the best ehaved creature. In fact, somehow he managed to chew up a shoe box last night while I slept…

You can train alerts like that

Most people have too low of expectations for their dogs. A good dog knows not to go through open doors/gates without permission but a great dog will “tell” you that something is amiss with the door/gate. Great dogs also prevent less disciplined dogs from breaking rules like going, uninvited, through open doors.

Happy training!

You know

I know he’s capable of this, but we are still working on some evil behavior which entails all of a sudden with no warning, mid walk (usually 30-40 mins in), turning around and leaping point blank on me, and continuing until I ask him to sit for about 5 while the wild look in his eyes goes away. I don’t get it. But until this ceases, we’ll be stuck. (I keep thinking maybe he doesn’t get enough exersise, but actually he really does, he’s quite fit…
He’s smart, but I seem to be not communicating everything properly!

Great pic

You need to print that out for a postcard or mousepad or something!

Oh that...

that is nothing.
My mom is the real Photog.

He is really a pretty dog, which may be the other reason he is so sassy!!!

I hope

he mellows out a wee bit more.
I probably should have adopted an older dog, rather than a puppy. I had this image of myself trotting along with the dog!!! This only works if the dog wants to be a runner, and Teulu really actually doesn’t. He likes to sprint and stop.
But all in all, he is a lovely dog, with a very interesting personality.
My Mom is a killer photographer. She went down with us and patiently waited for the light to get there. It was one of the best days I have spent with my Mom in recent times. She even taught me to skip stones!!!

dog training

Oooh, this is something I need to do, too! I have no experience at all, but have checked out a few books and have some online resources.

Having greyhounds is strange in some ways. Though they may come to you at 2 years old or more, they are still puppies, never having lived before in a house or having their own person.

Our foster, in particular, needs to learn to be home without me.

Congrats on your progress, and I wish you continued success.
