Learn Aikido (read all 2 entries…)
Four times... 4 years ago

Made to four different classes. It is good stuff. Interesting because it makes you concentrate on how you move. I came away with a bruised wrist this time from to much grabbing…

Our cool instructor (master/sensii?) was having some kind of Pavlov experience (where he made us eat huge meringue covered in cream and strawberries – doh that is the Pavlova experience which is on Thursday nights instead….) – where he made us do press ups and planks when ever somebody did something wrong – which was quite often…

More again next week – oh we are meant to keep a training diary too – maybe on 43 things somewhere….

What exactly is aikido?

Okay, I know I’m being lazy here - I could just google it and find out everything I ever wanted to know about it - but I’m curious to know more about it from you.

What’s it been like so far? (Other than press-up-ish and plank-y?)

Um - it is like...

a martial art that is not about punching or kicking but about using movement and the oppponent body against them.

You learn interesting ways that you move and that your partner moves in response.

You learn balance and spatial awareness.

You learn avoidance of attack.

You learn various “balance breakers” to get your attacker in your power.

You learn holds and grips and ways of getting out of them.

It is based in on sword work from Japan but it is a living martial art.

You learn to fall over properly.

You learn to defend against somebody attacking you with a knife (although the knife is actually a kind of rubber stick when praticing).

I would recommend it as something interesting to do (but as I mentioned I have only been to 4 lessons so far…)

Adar is back.

My kids...

took aikido lessons for several years when they were little guys.

I remember the sensei telling them that the goal was “to not hurt anyone. But if you have to, you can get away from an attacker. If you can’t get away, then you can put your attacker gently on the floor and keep him there while you explain why this attacking thing is a bad idea.”

Our sensei dude ...

seemed to explain a similar thing. There are no outright aggressive moves that we have learnt having said that some of the holds really hurt. I have the feeling that the sensei could make me hurt without even breaking a sweat…

This attacking thing is definitely a bad idea!

(BTW I love the idea of “little guys” – they sound cool – like they should have shades on and little three piece suits)

Adar is back.

were it not...

for the fact that they’d be very annoyed with me, I’d upload photos. (Motherhood is a strange drug.)

They may have been little guys once (one did insist on wearing a suit to unlikely events one year), but now they are both large, tall, tattoo’ed, bearded fellows. Tempus fugit!

It is my understanding that Aikido has no aggressive moves, only clever replies to aggressive moves.

Adrian has gotten 2 cheers on this entry.
