learn to play the bodhran
I have two

I bought one last year (an 14 inch tunable) and then just got my second one over the weekend (18 inch made in ireland non tunable)

My tipper was really big on the other one and I tried to read up on how to do it, but it never clicked.

So my husband bought me the new on the other day and everyting seems to be falling into place. I have the upbeat, down beat on and am starting to truly feel the half on the down beat now…

and it feels right…

I cannot wait until I am actually good enough to play in public, heck good enough to play alone and say, “darn, I just played the bodhran, not just beat on it!”

Comments:

Ah, the bodhran....

While doing my grad work at the Irish World Music Centre, I grew to appreciate the bodhran for the lovely, complex instrument it is. Many of my close friends at the Centre were in the graduate Traditional Music program. I sat in on a number of their sessions at the local pub, and would occasionally pick up my borrowed Irish flute and jump in.

....which reminds me….I wouldn’t mind starting to play trad flute again….
