I am not at all anti-drug. My father is a botantist. I am sure these drugs helps people. But remember that some drugs have been around a long time and have been well tested. Some have not.
Some anti-psychotics can also cause many side effects including just feeling bad about yourself, or feeling uneasy which can lead to self-harm, physchosis etc. It isn’t really on the label, or likely, but believe me it can happen.
In my opinion, using anticonvulsants to treat or prevent episodes is the safest, most effective course of action. Question a psychiatrist critically when he tries to use new-fangled medication to treat a very classic problem—bipolar disorder has been around, and treated with lithium when the doctors thought it was just magic mineral water.
My blog on this issue can be found at http://health.wikispaces.com It isn’t just my blog. It is a communal knowledge base of healthcare information and healthcare issues.
