Stick it to the Man Just a Little Bit

I’ve been struck with my monthly need for fast food this week and made a tasty discovery – Chipotle. They pretty much rock as far as quick food goes. In addition, it turns out that they support small farms and humane farming methods. Check it. They cost way more than McDonalds, but at least they serve food that had a happy-ish life first.

must be a midwest thing?

I’ve never seen them here. but bravo for them! Unless, of course, they turn out to be evil like all the rest in the end.

I'm not sure where all they're located

They make tasty burritos, though, and seem to employ a lot of people who don’t speak English. My Spanish gets a minor workout whenever I go. Or, perhaps I should say it got a workout whenever I went, now that I know that they’re a subsidiary of the Dark Overlord of Fast Food.

Actually

Chipotle belongs to McDonalds. And both have set standards for the conditions in which their suppliers’ chickens, cattle, pigs, etc. are raised. They hired Temple Grand, a specialist in humane treatment of cattle, to be a consultant. (She is autistic & has found that gives her special insights into the suffering of animals. What an amazing person. Oliver Sacks wrote an really interesting essay about her some years back.)

Anyway, I still don’t like McDonalds, but Chipotle is rather tasty.

Aw, heck

There I was thinking that there was a sticking-it-to-the-man component. Guess not. Sorry, y’all.

I’m glad to hear that McDonalds is pursuing more humane meat. I’m also a big fan of Temple Grandin. I wasn’t aware of the McDonalds link, though.

I agree

I feel like such a tool, such a cog in the machine. I found the Chipotle website while I was trying to find burrito coupons last week. They got me, hook, line and sinker.

Does this mean I should cut out Chipotle entirely? I wonder if Qdoba is any better.

I think that the answer

is to grow your own cows, potatoes, burritos (they grow on vines, don’t they?) etc.

That's it, Grandin

I looked at “Temple Grand” & thought, “Something’s missing.” Thanks for the syllable. :-) I always think the spelling of someone’s name is the most important spelling to get right.

And to prove how dyslexic I really am...

I didn’t even notice that you’d missed the “in.” Arrrgh, dyslexia. It’s like my brain tries to make shortcuts for me. I wish it would cut it out.

Call it

silent correction—at least in this case. Isn’t that more positive & elegant?

Obviously you must have experienced some frustrations, but it looks to me as if your brain is working quite well. Maybe it just likes the road less traveled. :-)

I hate McDonald's

but looooove chipotle’s! Their guacamole is the best ever, as are their soft chicken tacos. Yum! I was appalled to learn that McDonald’s owns them, but was somewhat pacified to find out that they started as an independently run company, in Colorado I think.

I'd been considering buying stock in Chipotle

But now that I know they belong to the Man, I’m not so interested. Truly, it’s a let-down.

Jaime hoping to catch up on blogging today

Chipotle is slowly spreading – I used to go into chipotle craving convulsions during my pregnancy, and then… oh yes… I found one in Seattle!

WOOHOO!!!!

I loooove Chipotles. Love. Love love love LOVE love love. Very good food an da reasonable price, all things considered.

I’m not fond of McDonalds either, but Chipotles I can DEFINITELY handle. I have a smidge of hope, since McDonalds has a contract to work on military bases that soon they’ll have Chipotles out on bases too!!!

A Well-Read Dog Head has gotten 2 cheers on this entry.
