I bought an outdoor cooker and 35-qt. kettle on clearance at Lowe’s for $44.

Beer!

I homebrew both beer and wine. It’s a lot of fun. I tend to lean more toward the winemaking, but I’ve done a few beers. Have you considered starting with something like a True Brew kit? You can make just about any type of beer you want, and it comes with just about all the ingredients you need, except for brewer’s sugar. And with the price of hops going up, it’s much more economical than doing it ALL from scratch. I’ve been brewing for 5 years now and I’m still not at the “from scratch” stage. I generally buy a true brew kit and add my own extras.

Brew kit

I’ve thought about using one of the kits, but I figure that once I’ve done that I’ll eventually want to do it from scratch anyway. If this goal sits undone for too long, I’ll probably go with a kit, though. How does the True Brew beer compare to off-the-shelf brews?

True Brew...

In all honesty, I’ve had a lot of fun starting with the kits and mixing them to my own recipes. True Brew’s IPA, Irish Stout, and American Lager tear the roof off of store brand beers. I think part of it is love, and part of it is taste. Of course, you can’t really beat Guinness, but you can make a great Stout just the same.

If you do go with a kit, I would point you towards True Brew before a Mr.Beer. True Brew kits will give you a fuller flavored beer, and are a little more involved.

I am not a big fan of American Lager, but I’ve made two batches of True Brew’s and loved it.

There’s also a book out (and tons and tons) of clone recipes. Of course because of the yeast and hops variances, they aren’t going to be exact from batch to batch, but I’ve done a Sierra Nevada IPA and a Flying Dog that were really close.
