What a cool trip. Will you travel with a friend or two? What made you decide to backpack through Thailand?

who went there 2 years ago and has been raving about it ever since. our trip was more independent than his first trip was, which was… more stressful for the short amount of time i had, but at the same time it gave me more of a taste for the real backpacking i want to do there someday than going with a tour group.
DocD spent yesterday climbing Diamond Head and today snorkeled at Hanauma.
While based in Japan for many years, I took long vacations to SE Asia. Backpacked through Thailand”s section of the Golden Triangle, central Thailand, and the southern islands. Cambodia five times (Angkor was unbelievable). Climbed a mountain in Nepal. Stayed with Iban headhunters in Borneo. Squatted in a beach shack on Tioman Island in Malaysia. Sailed to Boracay in the P.I. 4 times and stayed in beach bungalows. All over Indonesia (favorites were Bali, Bunaken and the Banda Islands where I climbed a live volcano). Singapore (my favorite city in the world). Still have Burma, Viet Nam and Laos to go.
