Back in the halcyon Napster days, I gleefully downloaded masses of MP3s, not being aware of the copyright issues. Which was pretty stupid of me, because I work in publishing, and at one stage was responsible for checking music copyright on a project I worked on. Admittedly, I did mostly download ancient 60s and 70s songs I would never have bought on a whole album, so I figured I wasn’t really ripping anyone’s royaltys off. But that’s a fairly dodgy argument, in all fairness.
I’d be more than happy to pay for downloads, as there are so many individual songs I’d love to have, but iTunes isn’t available in Australia yet, and as far as I can work out, you have to subscribe to MSN in order to download from them (and I am more than happy with Ozemail). So, how does an honest music fan of dubious, if eclectic taste fill up her iPod?
