It was with my boss. He was temping for a year, I was a new graduate. I didn’t think it was quite right that we were on the same wavelength so soon (it started at the interview!) It was wonderful being able to debate things with someone after having spent years trying to hide my intellect. We ended up having dinner regularly just to talk – we ended up wasting so much time at work we had to keep it separate. It was about everything – work, the media, politics, history, education, car maintenance. I’ve never discussed anything so much with one person. And now he’s moving for a promotion, I’m staying where I am, and it feels like some part of my soul had been ripped away.
