Get 8 people to share 8 things that I (probably) didn't know about them
I know you like to share... 23 months ago

I was agonizing over a blog tagging thing where Lisa Rousseau named me as one of the 8 people at the end of her 2008 inaugural post of getting 8 people to share 8 things about themselves that people probably didn’t know about them, and thought that I’d sidestep things and make it a goal here (as well as writing one of the longest run on sentences that I’ve crafted in quite a while). It’s changing the rules a bit, but I thought that it would be neat to move things from the blog community to this community which is vibrant, vital and inspiring. It’s a place where I love to be and this is a chance to let some other people share in it as well.
So you can take a look at my 8 things, and then, if you don’t mind, could you share 8 things here that people (or maybe just me) probably didn’t know about you.

Comments:

I tried to leave this comment on your site, but it wouldn’t let me!

Great list! I am really so jealous that you have seen Blue Velvet when presented by Dino de Laurentiis and David Lynch!! SO JEALOUS!

Oh no! I think that comments should be working. I have moderation turned on, so that could be why, but thanks for trying (and for leaving a comment here!)

It was very surprising to see the film and the filmmakers of Blue Velvet not knowing anything about it. The audience was laughing a bit at first and then got very quiet as the film became more intense.

Argh!

Sorry about that. I’m trying to fix it now…

It should be working now.
Thank you very much for letting me know about the problem!

It stopped working again which is due to a hard drive failure, but it’s being fixed as I write this, so everything should be up and running again soon.

I think it went up again just as you wrote this!

Eight Factoids

  1. I’ve slept in Jody Foster’s bed.
  2. I hiked the entire length of the John Muir Trail before I became a teenager.
  3. I’ve been skinny dipping at a natural spring on the White Sands Missile Range
  4. Although “Elder” is a good Scottish name (a sept of clan McIntosh), no Elders related to me by blood have any Scottish blood.
  5. As a toddler I called myself “Nonny.”
  6. My wife and I were photographed together at the same Christmas party when she was 3 and I was 7.
  7. My wife’s second cousin was my senior class president, my secret high school crush, and the longest term friend I’ve had.
  8. I have a small stuffed tiger named Sparky.

Those are fascinating and interesting things that I didn’t know about you.
The Christmas party photo is a very neat coincidence.
Thanks for sharing these!

I should clarify that Ms. Foster was not in her bed at the time … (Watch Contact, and the love scene in Puerto Rico … that bed, sans headboard, is one I’ve slept in many times)

My wife and (her second cousin and) I grew up in a subculture that makes 6 & 7 a bit less amazing … and led to the awkward situation of her consulting a physician during our honeymoon for a “private” infection and having the MD rave about her new father-in-law whilst she was in the stirrups.

You’re welcome … it was fun a fun exercise. Here’s hoping that others join in, too.

8 random facts...

  1. I grew up on a farm outside Brits in the Nortwest Province of South Africa.
  2. I was once chased into the farm dam by a feisty young bull.
  3. I can’t sleep in a room where there isn’t a window open.
  4. I’m more than 50% grey at the age of (almost) 29 – my dad was completely grey aged 25…
  5. I have a degree in Economics and International Trade & Finance.
  6. I’ve lived in a part of Scotland where in summer it doesn’t get dark at night.
  7. I met my love on facebook – very few people know this…
  8. This is the longest relationship I’ve been in since I ran away from my ex-husband. That was 5 years ago.

Those are very fascinating facts! Do you need the window open for the air to fall asleep or to have a connection with the world outside? When it is -20 Celcius or colder here it can be a challenge to keep the window open!

I suppose both :) I like waking up in the morning and watching my white curtains dance in the breeze. With the energy crisis in SA, everybody’s complaining about having to switch off air conditioners, but I really prefer having the windows open. Even when I lived in Germany with my ex-husband I did so (in winter).

It’s nice to feel the breeze from outside and hear things happening outside too. I’m not a fan of air conditioning in the house or the car, so I have to open the windows in the car and the house!

ToddieM Those who can take all life throws at them with a kind heart and smile

1.) I have an inordinate fear of being buried alive.
2.) I have started naming everybody who ever played for the Detroit Tigers in my head. I can currently rattle off about 375. It keeps my mind from wandering into darker waters.
3.) I prefer to think in the shower and sing in the car. Some people, I’m told, do the opposite.
4.) Mapping out photos on frickr fascinates me.
5.) I once saw the entire cast of Gilligans Island in Northern Michigan in the summer of 1969.
6.) The closest I ever came to death was stalling out my dad’s El Camino on the train tracks near Michigan State University. I can still see that train headlight bearing down on me. I was learning how to drive stick shift at the time; and my stupid g/f dared me to run the lights. I, obviously, was even more dumb than her for listening.
7.) I was ensnared in the Church of $cientology for almost four years in the early 90’s.
8.) Only three noises keep me from sleeping: babies crying, dogs barking, and water dripping. I can sleep through everything else, and am not bothered with parties, loud music, people talking, or lights left on.

I’m with you on #3. I do my best planning for work while I’m getting ready in the morning, and I like singing along with the radio in the car.

Whew, I’m glad you survived #6. That must have been terrifying!

ToddieM Those who can take all life throws at them with a kind heart and smile

Do you ever cringe when you hear your own voice b/c the radio fades out from time to time?

Yes, kids at home, never cross train tracks when there is an oncoming train. I’m sure they’ve rectified this situation since then, however, at the time; this particular crossing had no gates.

Yep I do cringe

Lately I’ve been singing along to CDs though and those don’t cut out on me like the radio. :)

I’m sure the crossing gates help but I’m sure there are young people fool enough to go around those too.

Thanks for sharing this Todd.
What interesting things. I share your fascination of mapping out photos. It’s so interesting to see photos in relation to where they were taken.
What a terrifying experience it must have been on the tracks and I’m very glad that it turned out well.
I think that the sensitivity to babies, dogs and water must be evolutionary in some way as they’re probably related to survival at a more primal level.

ToddieM Those who can take all life throws at them with a kind heart and smile

Yes, but the evolutionary angle doesn’t explain why I still sleep soundly right through the cawing of a pterodactyl or the toothy roar of a wooly mammoth.

Thanks Jaymie (not Marcie) for helping with this goal.
Congratulations on being veggie for over two years!
I hope that you learn to play stand-up bass. I work with someone who plays it and it’s quite something to see (and hear).
Thanks again for sharing!

flutter is full of wonder and watching God work

I like the # 8 ... does that count?

1. I have a big blue rubber band that I wear around my waist
2. when people see me they never believe my real age, they always think I am 20 to 25 yrs younger
3. I really did meet my best friend through 43T
4. my bed is my favorite chair in the house
5. my Doctor has told me to stop jogging and it only makes me want to do it more
6. my favorite fish died last month, I tried to have a funeral but my dh just flushed him … lol
7. I drink over 2 gallons of water a day
8. I’m very happy to be by myself, I don’t need people around

Thanks for sharing, flutter.
Those are fascinating and interesting facts.

Here's my eight.....

1. Barack Obama told me he loved me.
I was at a rally in Charleston WV, and he was signing copies of his book, I asked him to sign my admittance ticket and he explained that he only signs books. I said, “Awww” and he said, “If I signed yours, I’d have to sign everyone elses.” I’m not cool under pressure, so once again I replied, “Awwwww”. He then put his hands on my shoulders and said, “You know I still love ya!”
2. I think I am psychic.
3. I was a Bible Sword-Drill champion in the state of WV.
4. I am afraid of clowns.
5. I was in the movie “Eddie” with Whoopi Goldberg
6. I love mayonnaise and bread and butter pickles on toasted hamburger buns.
7. I will not write on paper that is wrinkled in any way.
8. I love Nag-Champa incense.

In what way were you in "Eddie".
