Do the Seattle to Portland (STP) ride
Hi all!

This will be my first time riding in the STP, and I am very excited! My husband use to road bike (years ago, when he was in his teens) but then he got his license, and realized he could get places faster in his car than on his bike…. He got back on the saddle in his early twenties, but this time it was a mountain bike. (Allot of really great single track in Bellingham, WA.)

I just started to ride my mountain bike to work last February, and now I am the marketing manager for my companies start up Bike2Work group. Shortly after I started commuting, it was obvious to me that I bought the wrong kind of bike…. I have never even taken my mountain bike on a trail… I would much rather be on the road!

I started playing with the idea of the STP, and after mentioning to my husband and the biking group that I wanted to do it, for Christmas this year my husband got me a Lemond Tourlamet! Much better suited for long road rides. :)

Through my work for the Biking group here at my job, I have been in contact with Cascade Bicycle Club, and we plan on following the STP Training Guide. And I have read that I should join in some of the group rides they offer, to get some experience riding in a large group.

I plan on starting my training next week. (Road bike is in the shop getting new, smaller handlebars). Any suggestions for a newcomer that has never done anything like this before? I know I need to train and get in shape. I am not a very physically active person since I stopped fencing last summer. Any suggestions for good bike riding nutrition sites? Any pointers that you wish someone had told you the first time you rode the STP?

Many suggestions for you

Be sure to check out the Cascade Message Boards on a regular basis. The Rides section is pretty quiet this time of the year, but as we get closer and closer to STP, it will increasingly heat up.

Definitely do the Cascade Training Ride series, if you live in the Seattle area. You will learn a lot from your fellow bike riders.

Continue to commute to work – this is the best way for you to get in lots of miles.

Consider joining us on this goal . I’ll be posting regular monthly mileage goals, and if you make them all, you’ll also achieve this goal
If you’re even more ambitious, go for this one

In addition to announcing your goal(s) on 43things, tell everyone you know that you’re planning to do this. This makes it really hard to back out. Tell your friends, your co-workers, your family. Believe me, they will say things like, “have you done that STP thing yet?” “How’s the training going?” It makes it really hard to give up.

Nutrition – my best advice is to experiment with different things on all those training rides you’re going to do. Different people swear by different things, because every body’s different.

There’s lots of specific advice about doing the STP itself, but I’ll limit myself to this one: realize that bicycling an event like this is mostly up in the head, and not in the legs. What you think makes as much difference as how physically prepared you are. For example, many people quit the ride shortly after Longview because now they’re in Oregon for goodness sakes, they should almost be there. This is purely a mental thing.

One way to view the ride is a whole series of 10 to 15 mile segments. You might have a regular ride from your house (ride to work? that usual loop?) that’s about that long. You can just think, “oh, 12 miles to Vader – that’s no problem”, and then, “oh, another 15 miles to Lexington – and lunch! No problem” rather than facing the fact that it is 67 miles still to Portland. Do you know what I mean?

Good luck! We’ll see you on STP!

Thanks!

Thanks so much for the advice!

I know myself, and I knew the more people I tell about this goal, the harder it will be for me to back out!

I am looking forward to the training. I will admit, I was a little discouraged after my first “offical/real” spinning class. It was allot harder than I thought it would be! And I am taking the class with a friend who is in WAY better cycling condition than I am! So I felt a little pathetic. I guess that means I am not pushing myself hard enough when I am training alone… Lots of room to improve! :)

But I have months to get the hang of it! I am excited!
