Ask questions that allow me to get to know my fellow 43Ters better (and play along myself) (read all 8 entries…)

No, I’m not practicing cheesy pickup lines. It’s the basis for the first of today’s two questions. Does that line even work? On with the questions!

1. When is your birthday?
2. What is your favorite birthday gift you’ve ever received?

Me:
1. July 31
2. My X-Box, but not for the reason you might think, though I do love playing college football on it. It’s my favorite because my Dad went and bought it for me for my 29th birthday without me asking for it or anybody else knowing he bought it. He even went after he and my Mom had already picked out presents for me and even managed to hide it from her. On the box, he wrote: “You work too hard. Please use this and take some time for yourself.” I hadn’t even fully discussed how stressed out school was making me with studying for my comprehensive exams, but somehow, he just knew. I don’t talk about what an amazing guy my Dad is often enough. The video game system was awesome, but knowing that my Dad understood what I was going through was a gift I’ll never forget.

That sounds

like a fantastic present. I’ve always wanted people to throw me a susprise party, but like you, I don’t want to ask for it or make people feel like they have to. It would mean more if like yours someone just decided that they wanted to and did.

Your party sounds like it was absolutely perfect and your best friend put a lot of thought into it. What a great story.

Cdngirl2 I'm back!!! Did you miss me?

The stubborn ram...

That’s me, I guess.

Birthday: April 9th

Favourite Gift:

I have a few I guess…receiving handmade gifts from my kids, and the time that my Mom made several different cakes for my birthday…and when my parents surprised me with a downpayment on a new (my first) car…but I think the most memorable would be my Grandmother…

My Grandfather had passed away about a year and a half earlier and my Grandmother was not doing well. We discovered that she had a brain tumor and she spent a month in the hospital before they figured it all out.

We brought her home to her apartment and then provided respite care for her for the next 3 and a half months. My Mother would spend the day taking care of her while my Dad & I both worked and then I would take care of her through the evening and sleep over at night until I had to go to work the next day.

I remember on the days leading up to my birthday how she got weaker and weaker and how the only thing she could do was loosely hold my hand and rub her thumb over mine.

She passed the day after my birthday but I was grateful that she was there with me for that day…I love her so much and think of her often.

The love of your family is such a wonderful gift.
