Yet I don’t get out to see her enough. I’d like to take my laptop over to her house and portable scanner and scan some old pics as she narrates the history of them.

I’m sure both of you will enjoy it, and saving the stories of the photos will guarantee that your children can enjoy them, too, someday.

That sounds incredible. You should do it before the opportunity is ever lost! Good luck! I bet it will be an incredible learning experience.

It’s funny, because I had that same thought – to take my scanner over to my Gramma’s and copy pics – just today. My Gramma isn’t in town but the next time I get there the scanner is coming. Please do it and report back.:)
Carm will be away from the computer a few days taking care of Mom stuff
I too think that is a fabulous idea. My mother is in her 80’s and I’ve long intended to get the stories behind her pictures recorded somehow. We tend to think we have forever to take care of these things but that’s not the case.
I don’t have a scanner but maybe that’s something I should consider. She has so many photos I’m not sure where I would start.
If you decide to do this I would be interested to know what software you use and how you associate the photos with the stories.
Best of luck to you!

Photoshop Elements might be worth exploring…but I think you could even photodocument by scanning pics in with a small portable scanner and then saving them as a .jpg, and using Access (build a simple database) and store the pic and the comments in there…
My cousin had the idea of doing an audio recording to accompany each one, and saving them as .wav files or something similar, but then someone might have to go back and translate them into text if you wanted that done, or perhaps a voice recognition software would do the trick.
Listening to audio recordings after someone you love can be hard, and I think somehow translating to text would be best. Scrapbooking software might do some of this as well…I will have to explore!
Another idea would be to make a “Grandma’s Memories” scrapbook…but still would be best to get written notes of some sort for that!
