Open-mindedness... 3 years ago

I have always thought of myself as an open-minded person. And, on the surface, I’m sure I do appear to be. I have recently realized that I need work on this area with respect to certain areas of life. This has been pointed out to me in a few ways lately. (No one’s told me this directly, I’ve just drawn some conclusions about this after some reflection on things.)

I think that this quality helps me be able to gain more knowledge before I make a decision, and therefore I make more informed decisions. So, I think that this is an important aspect of my self-actualization process.

It's easy to confuse...

...open-mindedness (actually the lack of) with tolerance.

In seeking our “place,” we arrive at conclusions formed by experiences, contemplation, and let’s not forget the whole nature-nurture deliberation.

Our views, critiques, opinions, and beliefs originate deeper within us than we care to admit, and sharing them (regardless of the forum) exposes our character, pride, and desire to be accepted {may be replaced with loved, agreed with, backed, seconded, supported, etc.}

We wander through life “open-minded” to social or political views we oppose or disfavor, and believe we live as open-minded creatures, but open-mindedness has its limits, and tolerance defines those limits.

On a more personal level (at least away from the social / political realms,) we remain tolerant to opinions of others if we anticipated the opposition and were prepared on some level. Once someone opposes or challenges something we’ve invested time, energy, effort, or a piece of ourselves into; or rebukes us when we least expect it, or in a manner least expect, we become defensive, when the reality is, we never were open-minded to begin with – - only tolerant, hence the defensiveness.

Thanks for the opportunity to share.

btw – I find you a kind, intelligent person, that articulates your point very well. I’m enjoying the discussions you elicit and I find you very tolerant.
