create a list of languages I would like to learn and plan the order in which I want to start learning them (read all 4 entries…)
Initial List 23 months ago

I have studied French, German and Italian so far but I would like to expand my horizons further. These are the languages that I am considering learning at the moment:

- Dutch
- Portuguese
- Greek
- Sanskrit
- Chinese
- Japanese
- Korean
- Pali
- Tagalog
- Bahasa Indonesia
- Javanese
- Swahili
- Hawai’ian
- Malay
- Arabic

I think this list needs to be narrowed down a little, or at least I need to vary the competences expected for each. For example, I might want to learn Chinese fluently, but only get by with basic Tagalog. I need to do some research into them all and see which ones are of most interest or importance to me.

That’s awesome! You’ve inspired me to make my own list. I’ve studied Spanish, German, French, Biblical Hebrew, and now Arabic. I’m not fluent in anything but English, though, lol. I know I want to learn Hindi, Chinese, and Swahili, but I have to go look up some other languages, now! Thanks for the inspiring post!

Wow

Biblical Hebrew!? That’s an unusual one! :) Not that I have room to talk, with Pali on my list!

Did you come up with any other languages? I came up with three others recently: Hawai’ian, Malay and Arabic.

I’d better go and edit my original post now! :)

Legionella is going to Hungary for the holidays! :)

tagalog

is soo nice! I know a few words, because I’m working together with many philippinos and they tought me some. It’s like a mixture of chinese and spanish. I also speak some greek, the reading is really easy, you just have to sit and learn the letters one by one. Talking is also not that difficult.

Cool :)

A mixture of Chinese and Spanish sounds very interesting! :) Do you know any other languages from that area of the world?

I’m looking for penfriends who speak different languages, so if you ever want to practice, I’m up for that :)

Legionella is going to Hungary for the holidays! :)

Yep :)

From that area of the world I don’t speak anything else (actually I only know a few words and sentences in tagalog, I’m not fluent), but living in an arabic country I know a few arabic words as well, and because my husband is from Cyprus, I speak a little greek too. But not fluent yet. :( And I’m planning to go to Denmark to study, so hopefully I can learn that language also! and my mother tongue is hungarian.
You are planning to leanr lots of languages, that will be enough for a lifetime! :)
I would be also interested to learn spanish and french later, they are both beautiful languages!
Where do people speak pali and javanese anyway?

So, you speak Hungarian and English fluently – do you speak any other languages fluently? I think my list is definitely more than a lifetime’s worth! :) I love being able to communicate with peoples and cultures all over the world. I accept the fact that English is the modern lingua franca (as Latin once was), but it doesn’t mean that I can’t make the effort anyway :)

Pali is a liturgical language used in Buddhist texts – it is not spoken, and was replaced by Sanskrit several centuries ago.

Javanese is spoken in central and eastern Java, Indonesia. It is related to Indonesian, as they are both in the Austronesian language family.

Are you going to study languages in Denmark?

i thought

i was the only one who had a list like this, how cool.

Same here

I always felt like I was on my own with my love of learning other languages too, but it’s nice to know there are other polyglots out there :)

Which languages are you interested in then?

i added my list

and it seems ridiculously overwhelming, but fun.

i like your approach about degrees of competence. I’d probably be happy to be fluent in a three or four, but in conversational/survival realm for another six or so.

i was curious how do you decide which are most important to you?
