do the 2009 Trans-Africa Unadventure (read all 2 entries…)

Road trip  — 5 months ago

Africa is often seen as a place for adventure, but for most of us living here it is just home.

It is possible to drive across Africa on a paved road, from Maputo to Walvis Bay. I think it is time for me to do this, and to emphasize that it is more like a US coast-to-coast road trip than a Cape-to-Kairo safari, I am calling it an Unadventure.

I’m not sure how I’m going to afford it. Is there anybody with lots of money who wants to join me?

Comments:

Unadventure?

It sounds pretty adventurous to me – how many miles is this trip?

P.S. I had to laugh – one of the sponsored links at the side of this goal was “transgender counseling”.

A few days

The great circle distance is about 1200 miles, so by road it will be more than that.

Worth doing

I’ve done this a few times, also frequently while they were building the Trans-Kalahari linking Botswana and Namibia (now a good decade plus years ago). It is worth it I think to do at least once.
Now it would be quite expensive with the rising fuel (and other costs, not to mention the transborder levy costs in Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique) but I would venture a guess that it is much cheaper than trying to fly to any of these countries and a whole lot more fun!

Old hand

“A few times” she says, modestly!

The value of age

It helps to have a few decades of living on the clock!
