Respect and take better care of my body (read all 13 entries…)
I weighed myself 23 months ago

..on the only weighing scale that works in my house. The discovery is enough to make me swear off carbs. Well, almost.

But seriously, this is getting out of control. It’s shameful how little self control I have where my food choices are concerned.

Plan of attack – only one serving of serious carb (rice, bread, pasta, etc) daily, for a week.

Wish me luck folks, things are about to get ugly around here. :S

Carbs getting a bad rap.

As you know, Nina, sometimes it’s how you serve the rice and pasta that adds the calories. I’ve read some articles lately that eating calorie “resistant” carbs can help lose weight. I take it that they include certain types of beans, cold potatoes, cold rice, etc.

I’m a bit reluctant to swear off all carbs. A friend of mine went on this no carb, hgh protein diet a couple of years ago and lost a whole bunch of weight. Slowly, over the past 2 years, unfortunately, he’s gained it all back again. I think moderation is the key. Sounds simple, right? lol

As always

..everything sounds simple, but when it comes to carbs, it’s harder than I thought to go low carb, let alone no carb!

Good Luck Nina...

...I know you can do it :o)

Thanks Mel

..am trying my darndest best! :p

Good luck Nina

I am better at losing weight than at keeping it off.

I have been most successful at losing weight and keeping it off if I eat carbs in moderation. I avoid refined carbs (refined white flour is taboo – I eat whole wheat products, no white rice – I eat brown, unrefined rice, and no sugar). I eat oats (old fashioned non instant), brown rice and roti (unleavened Indian bread made from whole wheat flour). If I eat bread, it is whole wheat or multi-grain. I can eat carbs at 3 meals each day and still lose 2 pounds per week with these rules and with exercising 5-6 times per week. I like to ensure my diet is low fat with lots of protein, veggies and fruits.

The problem with any overly restrictive eating pattern is that it is not sustainable. Somehow you regress to bad eating patterns after a stint of deprivation, and the pounds pile back on.

My mantra for my 40s is going to be moderation and consistency. I have a few extra pounds to lose and then my resolve is not to yo-yo. I am hoping I can stick to healthy, balanced eating to lose the weight and then keep it off.

excellent

advice, I need to remember to follow it… I just have a secret lust for white rice… or perhaps it is the butter I slather upon it?

Try brown rice with non-fat, unsweetened yoghurt perhaps?

I love rice with low-fat curry or with stir fried veggies. It takes some time for the taste buds to adapt to brown rice. Now I find white rice too pasty textured.

reminds me of changing from "regular" milk

to Non Fat or Low Fat.

Regular milk tastes too sweet and cream-like to me now.

Thanks for sharing this..

..I really admire your resolve and smart thinking when it comes to food and nutrition. Like you, I love bread and roti (we call any type of bread, roti in Malay!). So it’s terribly hard to resist especially when I’m really hungry.

But I will remember your tip the next time I sit down to eat. Focus on protein and resisiting refined carbs. Again, thanks for sharing this, very inspiring! Good luck with your healthy diet! :)

Tarima Kasih, Nina

I love your country.

Initially I got to visit because I helped initiate the Malaysia operations of the company I worked for. But I liked the country so much, I came there 4 more times on vacation.

One of the best holidays I ever had was at Langkawi. KL is one of my favorite cities.

This is a pic of me with Lulu. Lulu’s human parents own a shop (Kedai Jam) in Sungai Wang Plaza on Bukit Bintang. She is the gentlest and most huggable dog I have ever met. I never leave KL without a visit to that shop to meet Lulu.

That's great..

..I’m happy to know you enjoyed time in my country. It’s currently very hot, so I’m staying indoors as much as possible.

Seems like Lulu’s grown on you. She’s a beauty, no doubt about it. I bet she looks forward to your visits each time too.

Hope you’ll come to KL again some day, give me a buzz via 43People if you do! Take care :D

Uh oh!

I forgot about your healthy eating. phooey

I’m curious, AY, about your oats. I used to get the old-fashioned kind, now I get the 1-minute kind – is a there a nutritional/digestive difference between the two?

Depends on the brand you buy.

Most instant oat brands have added sugar or maple syrup. Some have additives such as starch. That increases the glycemic index.

Some brands of instant oats are just old-fashioned oats cut up finer. No sugar or additives. These are nutritionally and glycemic-index (GI) wise quite as good as old fashioned.

The instant oats we get here are the type with sugar added.

Also, I dont go by GI very strictly. I avoid refined carbs, but I eat fruits and vegetables that are high in GI.

Mine's not instant

it’s just quick – 100% whole grain rolled oats, so it should be the same, then.

P.S. But do you eat snickerdoodles? :-)

You bet I would (if we we had them here)

I know I shouldnt.

I try not to eat more than say 1 every fortnight. :)

wembleyheads is all sorts of googly-eyed :D

glycemic load is a better measure

Glycemic index is a good rule of thumb but it disregards portion size. Some things like watermelon have a very high GI (120), but because it is mostly water, the actual amount of sugar is very low.

There is an explanation on wikipedia and some tables of food values here.
For GL, Low=1-10, Mid=11-19, High=20 or more.

As far as losing weight, I recently read a book called Mindless Eating which has a variety of tips on how to make small changes without feeling deprived. That should help with sticking to it long term! The author also runs a free “Mindless Eating Challenge” that I signed up for to mindlessly eat more vegetables (it’s working!). Hope that helps!

Pajodama is home sweet home :)

Is everything going good with this goal?

New approach..

..I signed up to join a gym and enrolled for Personal Training. The trainer is a good-natured guy but he pushes me like crazy. I’m sore all over now. No visible results but i feel less bloated, so that helps.
