write Hebrew poetry
this might not be what you think 23 months ago

This goal is not about writing poetry in Hebrew but in the style of Hebrew poetry. Hebrew poetry is unique in the sense that it translates very well as unlike other languages its main feature is not based in a rhyme or rhythm but in pairs of lines in relation to each other.

I took a class a couple of years ago...

in which we were assigned various poetic forms in Hebrew [piyyutim] and told to go work ‘em out in English. The products were sometimes wonderful and sometimes pretty strange.

I became quite fond of playing with rhyme and acrostics: it’s a little like dancing in a straight-jacket but the strictures force my imagination in places it wouldn’t think to go otherwise.

Good luck!

neat

Actually this goal grew out of two seminary class assignments that I enjoyed doing. For a class on the Old Testament poetry and wisdom books, we had an assignment to write a lament Psalm in the style of Hebrew poetry. In a future class with the same professor on the Old Testament prophetic books, we had a similar assignment but to write a judgment oracle in the style of the Hebrew ones about against a modern issue with Biblical backing to condemn it in God’s name.

If it isn't too nosy...

where are you in seminary?

tell you what

If you’d like I’ll tell you in private but I’m not comfortable saying so openly out of privacy concerns. Also if you want I can send you two pieces of Hebrew poetry that I wrote while I’m at it. Just be warned that the style of Hebrew taught in Christian seminaries is not shy about using the Tetragrammaton which is also present in my Hebrew poetry.

Add me to your want to meet list (or at least temporarily) so I can send you a private message without running into Smackers issues.

Will do!

I completely understand—thanks for the suggestion.
