The lonesome night

Night holds the beauty of your soul.

The house was set on top of the hill, looking down the ocean with its high tides and low tides and the everlasting screams of the seagulls. It had an extraordinary aura to it,which made it all the more attractive. Those who passed by it just cannot help but admire its beauty and the serenity that closed around it.The night was at its best.It was full moon and this made the house look appealing, shimmering in the moonlight. It took one’s breath away. The calm sounds of the waves and the silver moon on the cold blue ocean just was too much for a person to go wild with excitement.

This particular night, the waves were so quiet that you could even hear the softest sounds that emanated from the far distant lighthouse. As the full moon lit brightly on the house,it needed no lamps or lights and you could see the entire house without lighting a single lamp. The silver moon bathed the whole house, leaving some kind of mystery for you to solve.

She did not particularly feel scared or creepy, but an intense sense of anxiety was boiling inside her of what was to come. She was alone in the house, but that did not bother her in the least. She enjoyed the solitude of the house as she has always been a loner all her life. She tried her best to get out of her introvert nature by going out with friends or her husband, only to find herself succumbing to her shell all the more.

Her husband is always on a business tour and she is always alone in the huge house that they built out of their dream. The house was their pride and joy.The maid that was arranged, comes at the break of the dawn and leaves as soon as the sun gets ready to set. After that, the house belongs to her alone.Since they both wanted to enjoy the freedom of marriage and togetherness, they had decided to have a child later in life. This gives them both space and they are happy and content this way. They never missed another person, apart from each other. They had been so in love with each other. They go out at times when they feel so,but it is not consistent.Whenever they felt like going for a drive or eating out, they just hop into the car and set out.

She always find the full moon intriguing. She feels there is some mysterious force out in the moon waiting to be discovered.Tonight, she decided to have her dinner early so that she could lie down on the hammock at the back porch and stare at the moon. She headed for the kitchen to warm the chicken pasta and salad she made in the evening.

She placed the pasta in the Microwave and turned it on.While it was getting warmed, she takes out the salad from the refrigerator and pour them on a plate, keeping the rest back. The pasta is now ready to be eaten. She took it out and sat down on the kitchen table, pouring herself a glass of wine from the bottle she prepared herself a couple of months ago.She did not believe in the wine available outside. It made her feel drunk. So she prefers home-made wine and drink only when her nerves need to be calmed.

Today, she needed it so badly to keep her anxiety at bay.She ate slowly, savouring the creamy and sweet pasta and drink some wine. She feels something missing. Music. That was it.She turns on the radio with some country music playing on.She finished off the pasta and ate the wholesome salad she had made with lots of herbs from the pretty little garden of hers. Her vegetable garden is one of the things she prided in.She had managed to grow quite a lot of stuff like onions, tomatoes, basil, turnips, chillies, carrots, and some parsley. She did not allow her maid to touch her precious garden or even her husband. She took immense care of it.

She makes salad almost everyday, not out of health reasons, but simply because she loves having them to keep her fresh. Her husband sometimes tease her about this, but she feels her cooking is incomplete without her special salads. She wipes the plate clean and empty the wine glass. Then she put the dishes in the sink to rinse them. She felt a whole lot better than she was fifteen minutes earlier. She rinsed the dishes and kept them on the holder and cleaned the table and switched off the radio and the lights in the kitchen and headed towards their bedroom. This room was her favourite done in her taste with pastel colours and the curtains are pale blue highlighting the matching tiles. She is a complete nature person and loves blue as she loves the sky deeply anytime of the day.

She slipped out of her clothes and stepped into the bathroom for a warm shower. She let the warm water run on her body for some time and cleansed her face and then step out to reach for the towel. That was when she heard it. A strange gush of the wind perhaps! No! It wasn’t that. She heard it again with an intense howling-like sound. A shiver ran through her trim body. She tried her best to stay in control but her heart beated frantically. She wiped her body very slowly to make sure she did not imagine the sounds but the sounds were growing more strong. She started shaking all over. She managed to get out of the bathroom and pulled the robe from the hanger and put them on with trembling hands. The sounds were louder and faster. Out of her panicky state she was confused to decide what she wanted to do. It was of no use calling her husband since he was out of town. Suddenly the thought of the night guard watching the houses came to her mind. She rushed to the table where she kept a phone book. She searched frantically for the number. She found it after much trouble where she had written it down. She picked up the phone and dialled
the number with her heart thumping and trying to ignore the sounds outside. After what took a lifetime the guard picked up the phone. She could not find her voice for a minute and stumbled as she did not know what to say. When he said “hello” a couple of times she managed a hoarse hello and explained the sound.

What he said surprised her at first. He told her it was nothing to worry and it was the new windbreaker that was under work. They installed it today and were working on it. It took her a while to take in what he told her. She asked him again if that was it. He reassured her and told her to go to bed in peace and he would be there anytime when she needed him during the night and nothing would escape his notice. She mumbled a “thank you” and put down the phone heaving a sigh of relief. Not wanting anymore excitement for the night she puts on her night suit and slipped off to bed saying a prayer of thanks to God and shut her eyes to the lonesome night.
