How to build a Kotatsu
I’ve googled the daylights out of the idea of building a kotatsu and I haven’t found any good instructions. I’ve even posted a question on Yahoo! Answers and got a “well, you could try this, but I don’t even really know what you’re doing so I hope my answer is even relevant” kind of responses.
When spring comes around and I start making mine I’m going to make some detailed instructions and post ‘em online. Woo!
It’s spring now, I hope you’re still planning on this project. I’m starting out on mine so would love to be able to compare.
I’m still planning it, in fact I was thinking of what materials I would need today. All I need is the money now. I think a trip to the hardware store is in order =)
I’m contemplating making “official” blueprints on some old grid paper left over from high school. I’ll probably do that this week too.

Ah. So that was your question on Yahoo! Answers. It was the most useful info I could find on the web for it. But yea, even then, it is still not useful enough. I wish someone would post some close up pictures of a kotatsu so at least we can examine how it is usually made.
Done right it shouldn’t be a fire hazard at all.
I think the frame will be the hardest part and even that’s pretty straightforward.

I’m wondering if this would be a quick + cheap + easy way to make the table part of it. Not quite sure how the material will work with heat though. The shape is also different, but I’m sure we can fuse it with some other box to get what we want?
(Not quite sure how the underside of a Kotatsu looks like.. I’ve never been near one.)

BTW, if anyone does make it (including myself), it would be nice to document it and put it up on Instructables. That will make many people happy and warm.
